Ram Navami in Vrindavan: Rangji Brahmotsav and Radha Raman

Ram Navami in Braj surprises many visitors. They arrive expecting Krishna songs, and find temples decorated for Rama, cradle songs for a newborn prince and a chariot rolling slowly down a lane. Braj is the land of Krishna, but it welcomes every form of the same Lord, and in spring the southern temple of Rangji becomes the heart of the festival.

This guide is for those who wish to be in Vrindavan around Ram Navami and the weeks of spring after Holi. It separates what is certain from what is not, and suggests how to plan.

What the festival is and why Braj celebrates it

Ram Navami marks the birth of Rama on the ninth day of the bright half of Chaitra. Vrindavan celebrates it in temples across traditions. At ISKCON Vrindavan, our guide data lists Ram Navami among the temple's festivals, and the Rangji Mandir, a temple of the Sri Vaishnava tradition of Ramanuja, holds its great spring festival in the same season.

The Brahmotsava of Rangji is a ten-day festival in Chaitra, around March or April, in which the deity rides in a chariot drawn by devotees through the temple's lane. It is a feast of the senses: music, lamps, flowers and the sound of Tamil and Sanskrit chants in a northern town. The Bhagavatam itself shows Krishna first appearing to his parents as four-armed Vishnu (Srimad Bhagavatam 10.3), one way the traditions meet.

Dates and the build-up

A calendar lists Ram Navami in 2027 on Thursday, 15 April, with a midday puja window. Confirm the date with a panchang near your travel. The Brahmotsava at Rangji falls in the Chaitra fortnight, and we found no verified date for 2027, so ask the temple. Holi in 2027 is on 22 March, according to one tourism calendar, so Ram Navami arrives about three weeks later and the weather will already be turning warm.

Radha Raman's appearance day, Radha Raman Prakatya, falls on Vaishakha Purnima, around April to May, in our place notes, and it is a separate occasion from Ram Navami. The two are easy to mix up, so keep them apart in your plans.

Day-by-day schedule

We have no verified programme for the days. In general, expect special decorations and extra darshans at Rangji during the Brahmotsava, and processions on the later days. The Radha Raman temple marks the appearance of its deity, who is said to have emerged from a shaligram stone of Gopal Bhatta Goswami in 1542 (traditional date), with abhishek and a festival atmosphere. Check each temple's own notice for hours.

Rangji's indicative hours are about 5:30 to 11:00 am and 4:30 to 8:30 pm in summer, with a midday closure. Radha Raman is open about 5:30 am to 12:30 pm and 4:00 to 9:00 pm in summer. Both are indicative, and festival days extend or change them.

Crowd, safety and comfort plan

Crowds at Rangji are quieter than at the Banke Bihari lanes, but the Brahmotsava procession closes the road in front of the temple, so plan for walking. Radha Raman sits in the old town, where cars do not enter the lanes, and a festival day adds crowds. March and April afternoons are warm, so go early and carry water and a hat. Keep your phone and valuables with your driver where the rules require, and ask a sevak before photographing.

Brahmotsav

The Brahmotsava is a temple festival, and visitors are guests. Non-Hindus may be restricted from the inner sanctum at Rangji, and we have not verified the present rule, so ask politely at the gate. The outer areas and the courtyard, with its gopuram, tank and tall gold-plated flagstaff, are open to visitors. If you wish to see the chariot, book a stay about a month ahead and arrive early on the day, because the lane closes for the procession.

Ask a temple sevak in advance which day the chariot goes out, since the schedule is set by the temple.

Where to stay and when to book

Rooms in Vrindavan are in demand in spring, especially after Holi, and a month's notice is sensible. The old town puts Radha Raman within a walk, while Rangji is on the main road, about 1.2 km from Banke Bihari. Staying near the Chhatikara Road or the ISKCON side gives easier parking. Laladham, our homestay in Braj and a short walk from the temples and ghats, can be paired with a lala:Cab car; confirm the exact location with the team when you book.

Food of the day

South Indian prasadam such as pulihora and curd rice is offered at Rangji in some seasons, according to our place notes, though this is unverified. Many people fast on Ram Navami and break the fast in the evening. Eat light, drink sealed water, and for a sattvik meal try Govinda's at ISKCON. See our Vrindavan food guide for other leads.

Cab and guide support

A lala:Cab driver will know that day's closures and park at a lot from which you can walk or ride. A guide can explain the Rangji tradition and the Radha Raman story in order. If the crowd is too much, a quieter temple day just before or after the festival gives the same blessing with less pressure.
