On the second day after Diwali, Vishram Ghat in Mathura fills with brothers and sisters. They come in pairs, in families, in whole villages, holding hands as they step down the stone stairs to the Yamuna. A sister marks her brother's forehead with a tilak, and they bathe together.
It is said that this ghat was chosen by Death himself. Here is the story, and how to join it gently.
What the festival is and why Braj celebrates it
Yama, the lord of death, and Yamuna were brother and sister. On the second day after Diwali, Yama came to visit his sister and she greeted him with such love that he promised that anyone who bathes in the Yamuna on that day would be free from the fear of death. This is the root of Bhai Dooj, also called Yama Dwitiya. The story is told in Purana tradition and local belief, and the Bhavishya Purana is named in our guide as a source, to be checked.
Mathura's Vishram Ghat is where thousands of siblings come to bathe together, because tradition places the meeting of Yama and Yamuna here. The ghat is also where Krishna is said to have rested after Kansa, and so the place is called the ghat of rest.
Many families make this a small ritual of their own. The sister applies a tilak of roli and rice, offers a sweet and a prayer for her brother's long life, and the brother gives a gift. At the ghat the same gestures are repeated with the river as witness, and strangers smile at each other, because everyone present is doing the same thing.
Dates and the build-up
In 2026 the sources we found list Bhai Dooj on 10 or 11 November. One panchang gives 10 November and others 11 November, since regional calendars count the tithi differently. Diwali itself is on 8 November, and Govardhan Puja on 9 or 10.
Check a local panchang, and ask a priest at the ghat which date they keep. Travel the day before to be sure.
Day-by-day schedule at the ghat
The ghat is open all day, and the bathing is done in the morning hours. Evening brings the aarti, about 6:00 pm in winter, though this varies with sunset. The Mathura parikrama of about 12 km also starts and ends at Vishram Ghat, with the largest walk on Akshaya Navami and Dev Uthani Ekadashi, just after Bhai Dooj.
Dwarkadhish is a short walk up the lane, and many families visit both on the same morning.
If you want a quieter experience, visit the day before or the day after, when the ghat is calm and a priest can tell you the story slowly. The river looks the same, and the meaning is unchanged. The evening aarti is a good alternative to the morning bath for elders.
Crowd, timing and safety
The crowd is heavy on Bhai Dooj. The bazaar lanes are closed to cars for much of the day, and only e-rickshaws and walking go through. Drop at the end of the bazaar road and walk 5 to 8 minutes. Parking at Holi Gate or the Yamuna road lots is about Rs 30 to 60, to be checked locally.
The steps are wet and the water can be deep, so go with care. Elders and children should be held by hand, and swimmers should stay near the steps. Water level and quality change, so check locally before deciding to bathe. A sprinkle of water on the head is also accepted.
Beware of the small scams
Some pandas offer a full tirtha puja for a high fee, and boatmen may charge per person. You are free to decline, or to agree on a modest amount before the ritual starts. A tilak by the sister, a sweet and a blessing need no payment.
A kind way to give is to keep small change for the boatman, the shoe stand and the flower seller, and to give a little more to a priest whose service you have actually asked for. Anyone who demands a set sum before you enter the water can be politely declined.
Where to stay and when to book
Mathura rooms near the ghat fill in Diwali week. If you also plan to see Govardhan and Vrindavan, a stay in Mathura serves all three. The Laladham homestay and lala:Cab can help you plan the days.
Food of the day
After the bath, the Holi Gate bazaar nearby offers kachori, jalebi and lassi, and sweets for the sister's gift. Buy from busy counters and eat hot. See our peda and food guides for more.
Bring the sister's sweet from a trusted shop, and keep it out of the sun. Peda boxed for the journey lasts about five to seven days by one account, which is plenty for a short trip home.
Cab and guide support
A lala:Cab driver can drop you at the right lot, and a guide can bring you to the ghat by the quiet route. If your brother or sister is travelling from afar, we can also arrange the airport pickup.
