When the monsoon is long gone and the heat has finally lifted, the evenings of Braj fill with a small, steady light. Women walk down to the Yamuna with leaf-cups of ghee lamps. In courtyards, a single lamp is raised toward the sky. This is Kartik, the month that devotees wait for.
It is said that the month belongs to Damodar, the boy tied with a rope by his mother. Today is the right time to talk about it, because it begins this week.
What Kartik is and why Braj loves it
Kartik is the lunar month that follows Ashwin, running from the day after Sharad Purnima to Kartik Purnima. In 2026 one source counts it from 27 October to 24 November. Regional calendars differ, so confirm with a panchang.
Devotees dedicate the month to Damodar, the name given to Krishna after Yashoda bound him with a rope around his belly (Bhagavata Purana, canto 10, chapters 9 and 10). The Padma Purana's Uttara Khanda has a Kartik Mahatmya praising the merit of this month, which we mention as a tradition and have not checked line by line.
Dates and the build-up
Sharad Purnima falls on 25 or 26 October 2026, depending on the calendar. Diwali is on 8 November. Govardhan Puja is on 9 or 10 November and Bhai Dooj on 10 or 11, as the sources disagree by a day. Kartik Purnima and Dev Diwali fall on 24 November 2026.
Because the festivals are so close together, many families plan a single long visit that covers the whole run, or stay for just the week of Diwali.
People count the days of the month in lamps. A family may offer one on each evening, adding more as Kartik Purnima approaches, so that the last night glows brightest. Visitors who arrive for only a few days can still join, even if it is a single lamp lit at the ghat and a verse softly sung.
Dipdan: giving a lamp
Dipdan, the gift of a lamp, is in Kartik it is the main practice. Each evening a ghee lamp is lit and raised before Damodar, with the Damodarashtakam sung. Many offer lamps at temples, at the Yamuna ghats and under the tulsi plant at home.
At Vishram Ghat in Mathura and at the Vrindavan ghats, the river fills with floating lamps toward Kartik Purnima. Buy small clay lamps and ghee from a trusted shop, since some stalls sell expensive lamp sets to visitors.
Radha Damodar and the temples of the month
Radha Damodar in Vrindavan is the quiet temple where the month is felt most simply. It was founded by Jiva Goswami in 1542 by tradition. A Govardhan stone that Sanatana Goswami carried is kept here, and devotees circle it four times as a substitute for the full Govardhan parikrama. Srila Prabhupada lived here from 1965.
It is about 0.7 km from Banke Bihari and near Seva Kunj. Hours are indicative, roughly 5:00 am to 12:00 pm and 5:00 pm to 8:30 pm in summer, with winter slightly shifted. Crowds are light all year, but heavy in Kartik.
Kartik at ISKCON Vrindavan
ISKCON Vrindavan keeps a daily Damodarashtakam through the month, with kirtan and lamps in the temple hall. It is one of the easiest places to join, with flat floors, clean toilets and a prasadam hall.
Mangala aarti begins at about 4:30 am, and the evening sandhya aarti is a good time to join. Timings come from third-party listings, so confirm at the gate.
If you are a first-time visitor, the temple is a gentle introduction to the month, since nobody asks you to know anything beforehand. Sit near the back, follow the clapping and let the tune carry you.
Russian and international Kartik pilgrims
Every year groups of devotees from Russia and other countries stay in Vrindavan for the whole month, a practice called Kartik vrata. Many are guided by their temples at home. They rise early, offer lamps and walk the parikrama.
If you come from abroad, plan your arrival with a driver from Delhi airport, since Vrindavan is about 170 km away. Check your visa length against the month before booking.
Crowd, safety and comfort
Mornings are cool and evenings are mild, which makes this the most comfortable pilgrimage season after winter begins. Fog begins late in the month, so mornings can be slow on the road.
Diwali and Govardhan Puja weeks are crowded and the lanes near Banke Bihari can close to cars. Wear a light shawl for the early hours.
Where to stay, food and cab support
Book early for the Diwali week. The Laladham homestay offers a quiet base for a longer stay, and lala:Cab can arrange the airport transfer and day drives.
Food in Kartik is traditionally sattvik, with many households avoiding onion and garlic through the month. Temple prasadam halls and Govinda's at ISKCON serve such meals.
