The story: Raman Reti: where the brothers played in the sand

Raman Reti means 'the sand that delights'. Tradition holds that this stretch of the Yamuna bank was where the cowherd boys Krishna and Balarama rolled in the fine sand, ran after calves and played all day. Devotees still walk the temple's perimeter and feel it as a childhood playground, not a monument.

The Bhagavatam speaks of these days in the forests of Vrindavan: the brothers leading the herds, the boys' laughter, the demon Aghasura and the lesson of fearlessness (Srimad Bhagavatam 10.11 to 10.15). The wider theme here is the joyful, simple friendship of Krishna with his cowherd friends.

A few centuries later Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (1486 to 1534) sent the Goswamis to uncover this land. In the 20th century, A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada carried the same message around the world. Today's lala:Cab visitor can walk in, sit down and sing along. No special knowledge is needed.
