Beyond Braj

Seeing the Taj and returning to Braj by evening

58 km from Mathura, 70 km from VrindavanAbout 1 to 1.5 hr each wayTaj closed on Fridays

Many families come to Braj for the darshan and then ask, quietly, whether the Taj Mahal is possible too. It is, and it is easy. Agra is close enough to go and come back in a day, if you plan the day around the Taj's own rhythm.

The road to Agra

Mathura to Agra is about 58 km, and from Vrindavan it is about 70 km. The usual route is the Delhi to Agra highway (NH-19), and the Yamuna Expressway also has an exit at Mathura and ends near Agra. Most guides put the drive near an hour and a half at most, and we advise adding half an hour for the Agra city traffic, which is slower than the highway.

A car with driver is far easier than a train for a day trip. You leave from your door, the car waits through the visit, and there is no luggage to carry from station to station.

The Taj Mahal: day and timings

Fridays are the one day to avoid, since general viewing is closed then. According to the official Taj Mahal site, it opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset, and ticket sales stop earlier than closing. Tickets are available online through the ASI booking sites listed on tajmahal.gov.in, and foreign visitors pay a different rate from Indians. Children under 15 enter free. Entry to the main mausoleum chamber is a separate, optional ticket.

Start from Vrindavan at around 5 am if you want the first hours, when the marble is cooler and the crowd smaller. Remember that the monument's hours change with the sunrise, so check the day's times before you set off.

What else fits in the day

Do not try all of them. Two monuments and a calm lunch make a day that you will remember with pleasure.

  • Agra Fort, open every day. It is about 2.5 km from the Taj, and a good second stop for the red sandstone and the river view.
  • Mehtab Bagh, the garden directly across the Yamuna from the Taj. It is the place for the Taj at the end of the afternoon, with fewer people.
  • Akbar's Tomb at Sikandra, on the Delhi side of Agra, about 10 km from the city centre, so it fits on the way back toward Mathura.
  • Fatehpur Sikri, about 40 km from Mathura, can be added if you start early and have a full day.

Fitting it into a Braj itinerary

The best slot is a day with no temple darshan fixed. Many families do the Taj on the day they arrive from Delhi, or on the day after Govardhan, when the legs want rest. Do not place it on the day of a major festival.

If your trip is two days only, keep the temples first and Agra as an optional extra. Our package pages show how Mathura, Vrindavan and Agra can be combined in sequence.

A gentle pace for elders

The Taj grounds are large, and the walk from the gate to the platform is long and open to the sun. Ask the driver to drop you as close to the gate as is allowed. Carry water and a cap, sit on the benches along the garden, and let the younger ones go ahead for photographs.

Wheelchairs and battery vehicles are possible near the monument, but confirm what is currently allowed with the staff at the gate. Plan a lunch stop with a clean toilet, and take the road home before it grows dark.

Keep photo ID with you, and expect a security check at the gate.
Check locally
  • Taj Mahal opening times follow sunrise and sunset, and ticket rates and the Friday rule can be revised. Check tajmahal.gov.in and the ASI ticket site.
  • Whether the Mathura to Agra road is signed NH-19, NH-44 or NH-2 differs between sources. Your driver will know the current route.
  • Wheelchair and battery vehicle access near the Taj, and whether any night viewing is running.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Is the Taj Mahal really closed on Friday?

Yes, for general viewing. The official site lists Friday as the closed day. Plan the trip on any other day of the week.

Can we do Agra and return to Vrindavan the same day?

Yes. Leave early, spend the middle of the day at the Taj and the Fort, and be back at your room by evening. Longer if you add Fatehpur Sikri.

Do foreign guests pay differently at the Taj?

Yes, ASI publishes separate rates for Indians, SAARC and BIMSTEC visitors, and other foreign nationals. Overseas Citizens of India are listed at the Indian rate.

Should we hire a guide in Agra?

It helps, especially at the Fort. Use ASI-approved guides, and agree on the plan with your driver before you reach the gate.
