The story: Krishna the king: Mathura to Dwarka

After killing Kansa, Krishna restored his grandfather Ugrasena to the throne of Mathura (Srimad Bhagavatam 10.44 and 10.45). Later, when Jarasandha attacked Mathura again and again, Krishna moved the Yadavas to the island city of Dwarka, which he founded in the western sea (Srimad Bhagavatam 10.50). The name Dwarkadhish means 'lord of Dwarka'.

The Mathura temple presents Krishna in that royal form. It follows the Pushtimarg of Vallabhacharya, a path of loving service in which the Lord is treated as a living child and king, woken, bathed, dressed, fed and put to sleep in eight periods of the day. For many people, this is a first view of the haveli sangeet and the eight darshans.

The monsoon months bring the Ghata and Hindola festivals: rooms decorated in dark cloud colours, swings of flowers and gold, devotional music. It is a rich cultural experience, whatever your sect.

Common questions

Why does the darshan open only for a few minutes?

In Pushtimarg the deity is served as a living child and king, and the curtain stays closed between services.

Is this the same as Dwarka in Gujarat?

No. It is a separate temple, honouring Krishna as the king of Dwarka.
