The story: Kansa's palace, from where the tyrant ruled Mathura

Kansa, son of Ugrasena, took the throne of Mathura by force and imprisoned his father. He ruled in fear: the people knew him as a tyrant who killed newborns to avoid the prophecy. When Krishna came to Mathura with Balarama, they entered the city, met the washerman, the garland-maker Sudama and the hunchbacked Kubja, broke the great bow in the sacrificial hall, and then faced Kansa's elephant Kuvalayapida (Srimad Bhagavatam 10.41 to 10.43).

The fort, today a ruin on the river, is the place devotees point to when they say that Kansa's palace stood. The Bhagavatam does not name the spot, so it is local tradition, but the fort's high wall above the Yamuna is a fine place to imagine the old Mathura.
