For most of the year, the feet of Banke Bihari are hidden under his dress. The devotee looks at his face, his bent waist, his flute, but never at his lotus feet. On one day only, in the bright fortnight of Vaishakha, the cloth is drawn back and the feet are shown to all. People call it the charan darshan.
It is among the largest days in the Vrindavan calendar, and one of the hardest to attend. Here is what to know before you decide.
What the festival is and why Braj celebrates it
Akshaya Tritiya falls on the third lunar day after the new moon of Vaishakha, in April or May. Across India it is a day of lasting good fortune, since akshaya means that which does not decay. In Vrindavan this is when, according to Banke Bihari tradition, the deity's feet are uncovered. News reports describe it as a unique custom of the temple, and say the feet remain covered for the rest of the year.
Devotees say seeing the feet is worth a lifetime of ordinary darshans. After the darshan, the deity is anointed with sandalwood paste and sandalwood laddus are offered at his feet, according to reports. The cooling paste, called chandan, belongs to the start of the hot season.
Why feet are seen once a year
The temple's own explanation is a matter of tradition and I could not find a text that gives it. What devotees say is simple: the Lord's feet are the most precious part of him, the refuge of the devotee, and they are kept hidden and revealed on a day of special merit. Whatever the origin, the effect is a sense of anticipation that lasts all year.
Reports suggest the practice has been unbroken in living memory, apart from the Covid years, when ordinary devotees were not admitted in 2020 and 2021. Please verify the details with the temple, since we have only news reports.
Dates (confirm with the panchang) and the build-up
In 2026 the day fell around 19 or 20 April, according to news reports of the rush. For 2027, our rough count points to around 9 May, but confirm it with a panchang. Because it is a tithi-based date, it can fall across two calendar days.
The build-up is the heat. Temples prepare cooling arrangements, the deity is dressed in light cloth, and fans and sandalwood appear. Local authorities announce traffic plans a few days before.
Day-by-day schedule at each temple
At Banke Bihari the charan darshan runs through the day, with the usual closure windows suspended or changed, so ask the temple for the day's notice. Other Vrindavan temples hold their own Akshaya Tritiya services, with sandalwood decoration, and many Pushtimarg temples begin the Chandan Yatra on this day.
Do not try to combine many temples on this day. One well-prepared visit is enough.
If you cannot attend the day
Many devotees choose to pay their respects on a quieter day. The temple stays open and the Lord is as present on a Tuesday in June as on the festival. Some travellers go to Radha Raman or Radha Vallabh on Akshaya Tritiya itself, where the crowd is manageable, and visit Banke Bihari later in the month.
Another way is to take part from the edge: stand in the lane, listen to the sound of the crowd singing, buy a sandalwood laddu for the family and go home. You will have felt the day without being swept by it.
The festival is also observed in other temples of Braj with the start of Chandan Yatra, a series of cooling decorations for the deity during summer. Ask a sevak about the days.
Crowd, safety and comfort plan
In 2024, authorities expected about ten lakh devotees at Banke Bihari on this day, and advised the sick, elderly and small children to stay away. This is an expected figure from news reports and not an official count. It is the day of the year when the lanes are at their narrowest and hottest.
If you attend, go with a group, fix a meeting point, carry water and ORS, wear light cotton and a cap, and leave the phone and valuables at your stay. Elders and children are better served by visiting on another day. If you cannot reach the feet, the darshan of the face on the days after is not lesser.
Where to stay and when to book
Book at least four to six weeks ahead, and stay outside the old town if you can, since lanes close to cars. A homestay on the ISKCON or Prem Mandir side with a driver who takes you to the lot is easier than a room in the old lanes. Ask for a room with air conditioning, since late April and May are hot.
Food of the day
Cooling foods are the custom: sattu drinks, buttermilk, mango, watermelon and sandalwood sherbet. Barley and sattu are traditional Akshaya Tritiya foods in northern India. Drink only bottled or boiled water, and avoid cut fruit from open stalls in the heat. Eat a light meal before you join the line.
Cab and guide support
On a day like this, a driver who knows the lot and the diversion routes is the main help. lala:Cab plans the drop point, the wait and a clear call-back time, and a guide can take elders to a quieter temple while the main line moves.
