A deity that rose, self-manifest, from a shaligram stone, in a kitchen whose fire has burned since 1542.

Gopal Bhatta Goswami, one of the six Goswamis of Vrindavan, had a wish: to worship Krishna in a form with a face, hands and feet. He carried twelve shaligram stones from his pilgrimage in the Himalaya. One day, the story goes, as he sat before them in sorrow, one stone opened as a full form of Krishna with the three-bent pose, the flute and a smile. This was on a Vaishakha full moon, traditionally 1542. They called him Radha Raman: the one who delights Radha.
The deity is small, only about 30 cm, and the back is still the round shaligram. The sevayat families have worshipped him without break for nearly five hundred years. There is no separate idol of Radha: a crown, set beside him, represents her.
The deeper background is the Vaishnava Gaudiya tradition of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, who sent the Goswamis to Vrindavan, and the Bhagavata's picture of Krishna as the one who dances with the cowherd girls (Srimad Bhagavatam 10.29 to 10.33).
