When the cold lets go of the plains, something changes in Braj before the calendar says so. The light turns gold, the mornings stop biting, and the fields round the villages go yellow with mustard flower. The songs in the temples change their tune. It is Basant, spring, and it is the beginning of the long climb to Holi.
This guide is for those who want to visit between roughly late January and March: what spring feels like here, which days are worth knowing, what to wear, and which dates need an early booking.
How the weather behaves
Spring on the Mathura plain moves from cool mornings in late January and February to warm afternoons by March, and by April the heat arrives. We have not verified exact monthly figures from the India Meteorological Department for this post, so please look at a live forecast for Mathura-Vrindavan before you pack. Expect pleasant days, cool mornings and evenings, and dust on windy afternoons.
The fog of mid-winter thins through February. March afternoons are warm enough for light cotton, but mornings may still need a shawl.
A thing locals notice first is the sound. The winter hush lifts, bells carry further in the warm air, and in the mornings the temple lanes smell of fresh flowers and sweets. Yellow, the colour of mustard and of Basant, appears everywhere in clothing, in flower garlands and in the decoration of the deities. Wearing a touch of yellow yourself is a small way to join the season.
Who should come in this season
Spring suits nearly everyone: families, elders who dislike cold, photographers and festival lovers. Seekers of empty temples should look elsewhere. From February, searches for Vrindavan Holi rise sharply, with one Keyword Planner series reaching about 27,100 in February and 14,800 in March for India, and temples and roads fill with it. If you prefer calm, choose the first fortnight of February or the weeks after Holi.
Basant Panchami and the Basanti Kamra
The Braj Holi season opens about forty days ahead, on Basant Panchami, the fifth day of the bright half of Magha. In Vrindavan, temples dress the deity in yellow and the singing turns to spring. The Bhagavatam speaks of the spring forest, its blossoming trees, birdsong and the soft sound of Krishna's flute (Srimad Bhagavatam 10.21).
At the Shahji Temple, the famous Basanti Kamra, a hall of Belgian glass chandeliers and mirrors, opens to the public only on Basant Panchami and for a day or so on either side, according to our place notes. Its opening is a major event in Vrindavan. Check the dates locally, and go early on the first day, because the crowd is large. The temple itself, a marble building of 1876 with spiral columns, is lovely at any other time of year as well.
Temple timings that change
Many temples shift from winter to summer hours in this season. Banke Bihari's summer timetable begins after Holi, so in February and early March the winter hours still apply, roughly 8:45 am to 1:00 pm and 4:30 to 8:30 pm. In the festival weeks, extra darshans and altered timings are common. Always check at the gate or with your driver.
A word for travellers coming from abroad: this is also the season when the first heat returns to Delhi. A cab with a working air-conditioner is worth checking by late March, and a hat and sunglasses are no longer optional. Pack one light sweater for early mornings, and keep a plastic bag for dusty or coloured clothes after Holi.
The countdown to Holi
The weeks before Holi have their own order. Laddu Holi and Lathmar Holi at Barsana and Nandgaon, the flower Holi at Banke Bihari, the colour of Mathura and Vrindavan, and the Huranga at Baldeo all fall in roughly one fortnight. In 2027 Lathmar Holi falls around 16 to 17 March, confirm locally: Barsana around the 16th, Nandgaon around the 17th, with Laddu Holi the day before. Holika Dahan is on 21 March, Holi (Dhulandi) on 22 March, and the Huranga around 23 March. See our Lathmar Holi guide for the plan.
Clothes, water and health
Layers are the answer: a thin wrap at dawn, cotton by day. Carry water, a hat for noon and a scarf for dust. Keep old clothes aside for Holi, since the colour does not leave. Hay fever and dust can irritate eyes and nose, so carry eye drops and any regular medicine. Eat freshly cooked food, and drink sealed water.
If you plan the festival fortnight, remember the sequence has several moving parts and a missed day cannot be recovered. Fix your arrival to the first Barsana day, give Vrindavan two days, and keep one flexible day at the end for rest or the Baldeo Huranga.
What to book and what to skip
Book stays and cars a month or more ahead for the Holi fortnight, and early for Basant Panchami if you wish to see the Shahji hall. Skip the narrow Banke Bihari lanes on the Holi weekends if you travel with small children or elders, and choose ISKCON and Prem Mandir instead. Skip heavy walking parikramas once the days warm in late March.
