Fog season: Delhi airport to Vrindavan in Dec and Jan

There is a particular hush on the road to Vrindavan in the first weeks of January. The fields lie flat and white, the trucks crawl with their lights on, and the sun, when it comes, is a pale coin behind the haze. It is a beautiful season, and it is also the season that asks for a little planning.

Fog does not stop the yatra. It only changes its clock. Here is how to plan the airport transfer so that the fog costs you hours, not peace.

What the weather is really like

Winter in Mathura and Vrindavan is cool, not harsh. Third-party climate sites put January mornings at around 7 to 10 degrees Celsius and afternoons near 20 to 22. These come from weather sites and not from IMD tables, so treat them as a guide.

Fog or mist is common on early mornings. The IMD city page for Mathura Vrindavan carried that remark for most days of its forecast in November 2025. We did not find a count of foggy days for December and January, so the honest advice is to expect some slow mornings and a few very slow ones.

Who should come in this season

Winter is the favoured pilgrimage season, because walking is comfortable and the temples are at their best. Families with elders, first-time visitors and those who want to walk the Govardhan parikrama all do well now.

The people who should plan with extra care are those on a tight connecting flight, those carrying frail elders, and those arriving on a very early morning landing. A night of fog can shift all three.

The expressway and the road

Most airport cars to Vrindavan use the Yamuna Expressway, about 170 to 175 km and roughly 3 to 3.5 hours in clear weather. Every winter the authorities lower the limits. In the 2025 season, light vehicles were capped at 75 km per hour and heavy vehicles at 60, from 15 December to 15 February. A fog-related pile-up in the area is part of why. We have no announcement yet for the 2026 to 2027 season, so check closer to your date.

A careful driver will slow down, keep his fog lights on and stop rather than chase a gap. This is exactly why a few extra minutes should be part of your plan and not a source of worry.

Ask your driver to confirm the day's speed limit and the state of the road before leaving the airport.

Buffer hours

Add at least one buffer hour to the usual three to three and a half. Add two if you land before sunrise, when fog is at its thickest, or if you travel on the return to catch an international flight.

On the way back to Delhi, leave the day before your flight if you can, or at least a full half-day early. A missed international flight is far more costly than a quiet night in Vrindavan.

Temple timings that change

Winter timings run later in the morning and close earlier in the evening. At Banke Bihari the winter hours are roughly 8:45 am to 1:00 pm and 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm, after Diwali. ISKCON Vrindavan keeps mangala aarti at about 4:30 am, and the sandhya aarti is around 6:30 pm in winter. Prem Mandir's evening show is earlier too. All of these come from third-party listings, so confirm them locally.

If your car is delayed, you may miss the morning window and find the afternoon rest in place. Keep the first day light so that nothing important is lost.

Clothes, water and health

Bring a shawl or light jacket, a woolen cap and socks, because temple floors are cold and you take off your shoes. Cover the ears of children and elders in the early hours. Carry water in the car, since roadside stops are few on the expressway.

Anyone with a chest condition should avoid the cold, damp hours before 9 am and after dusk. Keep their medicines in hand luggage, not in the boot.

What to book and what to skip

Book a driver who tracks the fog and flight updates, and who is willing to wait at the airport if the plane is late. Fix the pick-up point and a phone number in advance, and let the driver know if the flight is delayed.

Skip the pre-dawn road if you can. A landing at 5 or 6 am followed by an immediate drive may be a hard way to start. Many families rest at an airport lounge or hotel for a few hours first.

Month by month, December to February

December starts mild and gets cold quickly. January is the coldest month and the peak of fog. February warms up, and the Holi season brings the colours back.

lala:Cab plans these months with spare time built in, so that the road never has to be rushed.
