From the temple lanes of Vrindavan, Govardhan seems a world away, though it lies only a short drive south-west. On the way the road opens into fields, the buildings thin out and, if the morning is clear, the long low ridge of the hill appears on the horizon like a sleeping animal.
Here is how to make the journey, which road to take, how long it really takes and where to begin the circuit.
Distance and time
Govardhan is about 27 km from Banke Bihari, and about 25 km from Mathura, which is 45 to 60 minutes by road. From Delhi airport it is about 175 km. These figures come from our guide pages. Check a live map for your day, since market traffic in Mathura and Govardhan town can add time.
Leave Vrindavan early, ideally by 6 am, so that you reach Mansi Ganga by about 7 and begin before the heat.
The town of Govardhan itself is small and busy. Sweets, flower garlands and pilgrims fill the chowk, and cows wander through at will. If you have never visited, allow a few minutes at the start to find your bearings and your toilet, before you commit to the circuit.
Route options and road conditions
Most drivers go from Vrindavan toward Mathura and then take the road to Govardhan, passing through town traffic. The road is busy but usually in reasonable condition. On Purnima, Guru Purnima, Adhik Maas and Govardhan Puja, jams are heavy and cars are stopped at the outer ring, so plan extra time.
Ask your driver about the best approach on the day, since diversions are common in festival weeks.
Mathura is the usual junction on the way. If you are coming from Delhi airport, you can go directly to Govardhan before Vrindavan, but most families choose to settle in first and make Govardhan a separate morning. A late-night arrival and a dawn start for the hill is a hard combination.
Taxi, train and bus: an honest comparison
A taxi is by far the easiest, because the day involves several stops and the cab can meet you at the end of a walk. Buses run between Mathura and Govardhan, but schedules and stands should be checked locally, and a bus does not suit someone doing a circuit. We have not verified any train service to Govardhan.
Once there, many people use an e-rickshaw for the circuit. Agree the full fare for the loop, not a rate per person.
If you travel by bus, take only a light bag and a charged phone, and carry small change. The ride from Mathura to Govardhan is crowded in the morning. Elders are better in a private car with a driver who knows the lane to the Giriraj temple.
What a fair booking looks like
A fair booking states the vehicle, the hours, the kilometres and what is included. For a Govardhan day from Vrindavan, an hourly package is a natural fit. lala:Cab lists an 8-hour package of 80 km from Rs 1,500 for a hatchback, with other vehicles priced by multiplier, and a driver who knows where the car can wait. Check the booking page for the current figure and for any extra kilometres.
Ask whether the driver waits at the start and meets you at the end of your walk, since the full circuit is about 21 km and the cab cannot follow every path.
Arrival plan at Govardhan
Start at Mansi Ganga or Daan Ghati. Cars park at lots near these, for about Rs 30 to 80, to be checked locally. Take darshan at the Giriraj temple, then choose a plan: a short selection of stops, an e-rickshaw circuit of 3 to 4 hours with stops, or a full walk of 6 to 8 hours.
Radha Kund is about 5 km from Mansi Ganga, Kusum Sarovar about 3 km, and Jatipura about 4 km. Wear modest cotton, carry water and slippers with socks for hot tar. Monkeys live along the route.
Between seasons the heat can be fierce on the open road, and the stone of the kunds becomes too hot to stand on. In winter, carry a light shawl for the early hours. In the rains, parts of the route can be flooded, so ask your driver in advance.

Keep one thing in mind for the return. Evening traffic from Govardhan to Mathura slows near the town, so leave the hill by late afternoon if you wish to reach Vrindavan before the evening aarti hours begin.
