You have seen the Taj, and now the question arises on the second evening: can we also see Krishna's land? Happily, yes. Agra and Mathura sit on one road, and a day trip between them is one of the easiest in northern India.
It is said that a short journey well planned leaves the heart more open than a long one rushed. Here is how to make this one gentle.
Distance and time
Mathura is about 58 km from Agra by the fare table we use, which is roughly an hour to an hour and a half. Vrindavan adds about 12 km, and Vrindavan is about 70 km from Agra. Check a live map on the day, as traffic in Agra and Mathura can slow the ends of the trip.
A day trip is therefore easy: leave Agra early, reach Mathura by 8 am, finish Vrindavan by evening and return the same night.
If you want to see Fatehpur Sikri on the way, it adds a detour of about 40 km from Mathura by our distance table, and turns a day trip into a long one. Treat it as a separate day if you can, or keep it for the return.
Route and road conditions
The road runs along the national highway between the two cities. It is a busy road with trucks, so a good driver matters more than a fast car. Fog in winter mornings slows traffic, so leave a little later in December and January.
Mathura is on the way to Delhi, so travellers who continue north can end the day in Braj and move on.
Toll plazas and railway crossings can add small delays, and the stretch near Mathura city is busy at school and office hours. Your driver will know the quieter approach to the Janmabhoomi, which saves time in the morning.
Taxi, train and bus: an honest comparison
A taxi gives you the whole day without any transfers, and it can wait while you walk through the temples. Trains connect Agra with Mathura Junction, and many are short rides, but you then need a second ride to Vrindavan, and a third inside the towns. Buses run too, with schedules to check locally.
For a day trip with several stops, a taxi is almost always the better choice. A train is for a single-purpose visit to the Janmabhoomi.
Cost is another difference. A train fare is low, but once you add the ride from Mathura Junction to Vrindavan and local transport, the saving is smaller than it first appears, and the time lost is real. A family of four or more usually finds a taxi comparable and far easier.
What a fair booking looks like
A fair booking states the vehicle, the stops, the hours and the total fare including tolls and parking. Ask whether the driver waits at each temple, since lots near Banke Bihari can be a walk away.
Our outstation fares are shown on the site. We charge a fixed all-in rate, and a driver who knows Braj saves hours at the temple lots. Please check the booking page for the current quote for your date.
Ask also about the pickup time and place in Agra, and whether the driver will stop for breakfast on the way. A short halt for tea and a clean toilet at a highway stop makes the whole morning more comfortable, especially for children and elders.
Arrival plan in Braj
A gentle day runs like this. Reach Krishna Janmabhoomi early, since phones and electronics must be left outside and the wait is short in the first hour. Walk to Dwarkadhish and Vishram Ghat, eat kachori, then drive to Vrindavan for Banke Bihari before the midday close, at roughly 1 pm.
After a rest and a sattvik lunch at ISKCON, see Prem Mandir for the evening lights, and drive back to Agra at dusk. The return takes an hour and a half or more.
If you reach Mathura earlier than the temples open, take a walk at Vishram Ghat. The river in the early light is a quiet start, and a cup of tea at the ghat steps costs little and sets the mood for the day ahead.
