The map of this part of Uttar Pradesh is kind to travellers. Mathura, Fatehpur Sikri and Agra sit on one broad road, each a short drive from the next, and between them they offer a temple town, a Mughal city of red sandstone and the Taj Mahal. A pilgrim can hold all three in a few easy days.
It is said that the road itself is a teacher. Here is how the three fit together, and in what order.
Why Agra fits with Braj
Mathura is about 58 km from Agra by our fare table, and Fatehpur Sikri is about 40 km from Mathura by the same table. Vrindavan is about 70 km from Agra. These are figures to check on a live map, since routes and traffic change.
Because the places lie close, a driver can combine them in a way that avoids driving the same stretch twice. The detour to Fatehpur Sikri adds a stop, and not a separate trip.
Think of the three as chapters. Mathura holds the oldest memory, of the birth of Krishna, Fatehpur Sikri holds the story of Akbar's short-lived capital, and Agra holds the Taj. A traveller who reads about each before leaving will see more on the day, and a good guide adds the rest.
How to fit it into the trip
A natural order is Delhi, Mathura and Vrindavan, then Fatehpur Sikri, then Agra, and back to Delhi. This follows the road, puts temples first when you are fresh and brings you to the Taj on a morning when you are rested. Fatehpur Sikri is best seen in the morning or late afternoon, outside the midday heat.
If you only have a day, see Mathura in the morning, drive to Agra for the afternoon, and plan Fatehpur Sikri for another day. Do not try to see all three monuments in one hurried day.
Travel by morning and visit by afternoon in the hot months. Between April and June, midday at Fatehpur Sikri is harsh, since the sandstone courtyards reflect the sun. In winter, the same courtyards are lovely, but fog can slow the road, so leave a little later on foggy mornings.
What to see and timings
At Mathura, the Janmabhoomi, Dwarkadhish and Vishram Ghat are the heart. In Agra, the Taj Mahal opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset, and is closed on Fridays, by the official site. Agra Fort and the tomb called Itimad-ud-Daulah are also visited, and Fatehpur Sikri is the abandoned Mughal city south-west of Agra.
We have not verified the opening hours of Fatehpur Sikri, Agra Fort or Itimad-ud-Daulah, so please check the ASI listings before you go. Our separate post covers the Agra Fort and the tomb in more detail.
Tickets for ASI monuments are best booked online where possible, and entry fees differ for Indian and foreign visitors. Carry your passport or an ID if asked. Official guides at each monument are licensed, and an independent guide who is not licensed cannot enter in some places, so ask your driver for advice before you hire one.
Where to eat, pure veg, check locally
Agra and Fatehpur Sikri are not pilgrim towns, so onion and garlic are not the default. Agra restaurants named in our research include Shripati Dwarkadhish near the Red Fort, Choko Jeeman for Marwari Jain food, and Lakshmi Vilas in Sadar Bazaar for an unlimited thali, all to be checked locally.
At Fatehpur Sikri, Jodha Restaurant is described as home-style vegetarian by reviewers, and Kutumbakam is listed as pure veg, but with few reviews. Agree prices before you order near tourist sites, and avoid shops that pay the driver a commission.
Petha, the sweet of Agra, makes a good gift, but buy from a shop that shows a date. Bedai and kachori breakfast stalls in Agra mirror those of Mathura, and are best early in the day.
A calm plan with a cab
Day 1: Delhi to Mathura and Vrindavan. Day 2: Vrindavan, Gokul or Govardhan. Day 3: Mathura to Fatehpur Sikri in the morning and Agra in the afternoon. Day 4: the Taj at sunrise, and the drive to Delhi.
lala:Cab can drive the whole route with a driver who knows the monuments' parking and gates, and can add a guide in Braj. Ask for the current quote and inclusions.
Lala:Cab keeps the plan simple. We ask for your dates, your flight if you have one, and any needs of your group, then suggest the order and the nights. Fares for outstation trips are fixed and stated before you travel, and our drivers know the parking at each site.
