The story: The Ganga that appeared from a thought

Nanda and Yashoda, preparing for a pilgrimage to the Ganga, were told by Krishna that there was no need: the Ganga would come to Govardhan. He thought of the river with his mind (manas), and the waters appeared from the hill. That is why the kund is called Manasi Ganga.

Indra is also remembered here as bathing in the kund in homage after the Govardhan Lila (Srimad Bhagavatam 10.27). Pilgrims bathe before beginning the parikrama. The tank is lit with thousands of lamps in the Deepdaan on Diwali.

The story itself is a local and Gaudiya tradition (it appears in works like Chaitanya Charitamrita and later pilgrimage texts) and is not in the Bhagavatam text.

Where this is told
  • Srimad Bhagavatam 10.27 (Indra honours Krishna)
  • The Mansi Ganga origin is local tradition, also narrated in later Gaudiya pilgrim texts
