The story: The arm of Shrinathji rises from the hill

In the Pushtimarg tradition, Krishna's raised left arm appeared from Giriraj in 1409 (Vikram era), on the day of Shravana Shukla Panchami (Nag Panchami), and the face appeared later, in 1479. The cowherds saw a cow pour milk daily on a spot on the hill, and a hand appeared. This deity was named Devadamana, later Shrinathji. Vallabhacharya (1479 to 1531) installed Shrinathji on Govardhan in a small shrine in 1499, and the Pushtimarg sect was founded here.

Madhavendra Puri, Chaitanya's Vaishnava predecessor, is also linked to this place. The Chaitanya Charitamrita narrates how Gopal, the deity he served at Govardhan, asked for sandalwood and a cooling paste (Madhya Lila 4).

The Mukharvind at Jatipura is the face of the hill itself, worshipped with milk and flowers, a reminder of the Bhagavata's Govardhan chapters (Srimad Bhagavatam 10.24 to 10.25). Dates here follow tradition and should be treated accordingly.
