Of all the questions asked about Vrindavan, the plainest is also the most common: how far is it from Delhi? Tens of thousands of people type it into a search box every month, standing in an airport queue or planning a trip from another country.
The honest answer is a range, because Delhi is large and Vrindavan has many corners. Here is the range, the two main roads, the train and bus alternatives, and what a fair cab booking looks like when you decide to go.
Distance and time
Road sources give the Delhi to Vrindavan distance as roughly 150 to 185 km, depending on where in Delhi you start and which part of Vrindavan you end in. One cab operator lists 185 km and a drive of 3 to 3.5 hours, and a trip planner shows about three hours by cab. The shortest figure we saw, 138 km, appears to be a bus or straight-line figure and is not a good guide for a car.
From Delhi airport the guide data gives about 170 to 175 km to the Banke Bihari area, around three hours. Treat any figure as a plan and check a live map on the day, because the last few kilometres inside Vrindavan can take as long as ten on the expressway.
Route options and road conditions
The usual car route runs from Delhi through Noida and Greater Noida onto the Yamuna Expressway, leaves it at the Mathura exit and reaches Vrindavan by the Mathura road. A travel guide calls this the fastest and most comfortable road option. The Yamuna Expressway is a toll road, so carry the toll in your cab quote, and expect fast traffic and occasional fog in winter.
The other way is the old highway towards Agra through Faridabad, Palwal and Kosi, reaching Mathura and then Vrindavan. It passes through towns and is slower, but some drivers prefer it for particular starting points in south or west Delhi. Ask your driver which suits your pickup.
Cab, train, bus: an honest comparison
A cab is the easiest for families, elders and anyone with luggage. It picks you up at the door, waits through the last crowded stretch and drops you near your stay. A good driver knows the lots at Banke Bihari and Prem Mandir.
The train takes you to Mathura Junction, about 11 to 15 km from Vrindavan depending on the source. Mathura has frequent trains from Delhi stations, but we have not verified timetables, so check IRCTC for the day. From Mathura you can go on by taxi or e-rickshaw, which takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Vrindavan also has its own station, with a few local passenger trains a day from Mathura, according to Wikipedia and listings.
Buses also run from Delhi to Mathura and Vrindavan. They are the cheapest option and can be slow, crowded and uncomfortable with luggage. They suit a single traveller with time. We would not suggest them for an elder, a family with children or a late-night arrival.
By road and rail: which one on which day
If your flight lands early morning and you wish to reach quickly, take a cab. If you come on a weekday from the city centre and travel light, the train to Mathura with a cab onwards is a good value plan. In December and January, fog can delay both flights and trains and slow the expressway; a cab that can adjust is calmer than a fixed ticket.
On big festival days, rail and road both bend. Vehicles are held far out, and the last stretch is on foot. Read our festival guides and arrive a day before.
What a fair booking looks like
Ask for a written quote that names the pickup point, the drop, the car type, the toll, parking and driver charges, and whether the price is one way or round trip. Ask whether waiting time is included, whether night travel adds a charge and what happens if your flight is late. A fair quote has no surprises at the end.
Check that the driver knows Vrindavan and has a phone number you can call. Share your flight number so the driver can track your landing. A good operator will not ask for the full payment in advance.
Arrival plan in Braj
Arrive in the old town in daylight if you can. Your driver will park at the lot nearest your stay, and you may walk or take an e-rickshaw for the last stretch. Settle in, drink water, rest an hour and go to the evening aarti. Do not plan a heavy first day.
Hotels and homestays often allow check-in from noon or two o'clock, so ask about early arrival if you land at dawn. The Laladham homestay can be arranged with a lala:Cab pickup so that the road and the stay are one booking.
