Gyan Gudri Vrindavan: Uddhava and the Bhramara Gita

Everyone who comes to Vrindavan hears about love. Few hear the story of the man who came to teach and was taught instead. He was learned, wise and kind, he carried a message from Krishna, and within a few days he asked to be born again as the grass underfoot.

It is said that a little shrine along the parikrama path marks the spot. Here is the story, and what we know about the place.

The story in a few lines

After Krishna left for Mathura, the gopis could think of nothing else. Krishna sent his learned friend Uddhava to console them with teaching about the formless Brahman. The gopis laughed gently, spoke to a passing bumblebee and sang of their longing. This song is called the Bhramara Gita, or song of the bee. Uddhava was overwhelmed. He saw that their love was greater than any knowledge.

He prayed to be a blade of grass in Vrindavan so that their feet might touch him. The Bhagavata Purana tells this in the tenth canto, chapters 46 and 47, and the grass verse is 10.47.61.

Notice how the story turns. Uddhava comes as a teacher and leaves as a student, and the gopis, who never read a scripture, give him the deepest lesson of his life. Braj people tell it with a smile, because every proud scholar has met a village grandmother who knew more than he did.

Why it matters on the yatra

Gyan Gudri means the quilt of knowledge. In local tradition it is the spot where Uddhava laid down his pride of learning, as one might lay down a worn cloth. The place identification is local, and its exact position on the Vrindavan parikrama should be checked on the ground.

The story speaks to a pilgrim who arrives with a plan and a head full of facts. Braj teaches that the heart arrives first and the facts follow.

Uddhava's prayer is also remembered at Kusum Sarovar in Govardhan, by tradition, although the text does not name the place. So the same verse echoes in more than one corner of Braj, and each place keeps it in its own way.

Getting there

The shrine stands on the parikrama marg of Vrindavan. By the guide it is about 2 km from Banke Bihari, 13 km from Mathura Junction and about 175 km from Delhi airport. Kesi Ghat and Madan Mohan are each about 1 km away.

Parking and the walking distance are not known, so ask your driver to find the nearest road. We have not verified the exact location, and a local guide will help.

If you walk the Vrindavan parikrama, this shrine comes as one quiet halt among many, so keep your pace easy and your water close.

Timings and what changes by season

It is a small open shrine, and we have no timings. Visit in the morning, when the lane is quiet. In summer, avoid midday heat, and in the Kartik season, October and November, the parikrama path has more pilgrims.

The Vrindavan parikrama is a pleasant walk in winter, and Gyan Gudri can be a short pause on that walk.

Dress, phones, crowds and kind manners

Dress modestly and be quiet, since it is a place for reflection. The crowd is usually light. Take care on uneven ground and watch for monkeys. Toilets are not likely nearby.

There is nothing to buy here. Anyone offering a special rite for a fee is not part of the tradition, and you can decline.

A short pause is enough. Many pilgrims read the grass verse aloud, or simply stand in silence for a minute. There is no ritual to perform and no fee to pay, and that simplicity is the point.

The Bhramara Gita

In chapter 47 of the tenth canto, a bee settles near the gopis, and Radha, speaking to it, turns the message of knowledge into a song of reproach and love. It is among the most beautiful passages of the Bhagavatam, and it is worth reading before you go. Vedabase gives it in Sanskrit with a translation.

Uddhava stays in Vrindavan for months, learns what love means, and goes back to Mathura changed.

Where to eat nearby

The old town stalls near Madan Mohan serve chai and kachori, and Kesi Ghat has chai and chaat. Our Vrindavan food guide has more, all to be checked locally.

If your driver does not know the shrine, ask at Madan Mohan or at a shop on the parikrama road, and walk the last stretch. Local people are generally glad to point the way to a place of their own tradition.

Plan it with nearby stops

Allow 15 minutes, as a pause along the circuit. Pair it with Madan Mohan, Kaliya Ghat and Kesi Ghat. lala:Cab can send a guide who knows the shrine and tells how the bee came to carry the song.
