There was a day when the river itself was poisoned, and the cowherd boys and calves who drank from it fell lifeless on the bank. Then a boy climbed a kadamba tree, tied up his clothes and jumped into the deep pool. What happened next is one of the most loved stories in all of Braj.
It is said that every child in Vrindavan learns it before they learn to read. Let us tell it as the Bhagavatam does, and then find the place where it is remembered.
The story as the scripture tells it
The serpent Kaliya had made his home in a deep pool of the Yamuna, and his poison made the water boil and kill the birds flying overhead. The Bhagavata Purana tells it in chapters 16 and 17 of the tenth canto. Krishna climbed a kadamba tree and plunged into the water. After a long struggle he rose on Kaliya's hoods and danced there while the gods rained flowers.
Kaliya's wives prayed for their husband's life, and Krishna spared him and sent him away to Ramanaka island. The river was healed. A forest fire follows in the next chapters, but the heart of this story is the dance.
Notice the detail that the Bhagavatam gives of Krishna's joy in the dance. He is not angry. He moves on each hood in turn, and where Kaliya raises a head to strike, Krishna steps on it. This is the picture painted on temple walls and carried in children's plays across India.
Where in Braj it happened
Vrindavan tradition places the pool at Kaliya Ghat, a stone ghat below the Madan Mohan hill. A kadamba tree on the bank is said to be the one Krishna leapt from, and it alone survived the poison. Whatever its botanical age, the tree is dear to pilgrims, and no scientific date is known. That makes it local tradition.
Other places in Braj also claim the story, and traditions differ, so ask locally if you hear another name. We have noted only the site given in our guide. The shrine at the ghat shows Krishna dancing on Kaliya.
What the story means to the people who live here
To the people of Braj, the Yamuna is Yamuna Maharani, a goddess and a mother. The poison in the water is easy to read as a wound in her, and the boy who heals it as the Lord who cares for the land. The dance on the hoods is not a victory over hatred, because Kaliya is also forgiven and sent to a new home.
Many elders tell the story at the river when children are afraid of the water. It teaches that fear is not a monster to be killed but a serpent to be danced upon.
In some Braj villages, a play called Naag Nathaiya is staged on the river, with a boy actor dancing on a model of the serpent while the audience sits along the bank. It is a joyful event, and families come with picnic baskets and small children.
How to read it before you go
Read the two chapters, 10.16 and 10.17, on Vedabase, which gives the Sanskrit and the translation, or ask a priest at the ghat to tell it. In Vrindavan, a naag nathaiya lila is staged around Kartik, near Dev Uthani, so check locally if you are visiting in October or November.
A short list for reading: the Bhagavata chapters above, the guide page on Kesi Ghat for the river at Vrindavan, and our post on the butter thief for the child Krishna's other stories.
If you are travelling with children, tell them the story the night before, and let them draw the tree, the boy and the serpent. When they arrive at the ghat, they will recognise the place at once, and the visit will feel like meeting a friend.
Kaliya Ghat, Vrindavan
Kaliya Ghat lies near the base of the Madan Mohan hill, about 2 km from Banke Bihari, 13 km from Mathura Junction and around 175 km from Delhi airport. Madan Mohan is 0.2 km away, Imli Tala 0.8 km and Kesi Ghat 1 km. Park near the base of the hill and walk 2 minutes.
Visit in the morning or at dusk. A quarter of an hour is enough. Timings are not fixed, so check locally. Dress modestly and take care on the steps.
Visit the place
Pair the ghat with Madan Mohan, which stands above it, and with Kesi Ghat for the aarti at dusk. Our guide pages cover each. lala:Cab can arrange a guide to tell the story at the water, so it comes alive.
Takeaway: carry the story, not the worry
Leave with a single picture: a small boy, a tall tree, and a river made clean again. When the road feels long or the lane feels crowded, that picture does more than any plan. Take the part of the story you need, and let the rest be.
