The two hills of Braj are Giriraj and Bhanugarh, and they sit about a morning's drive apart. One is the hill Krishna lifted on his finger, and the other is the hill where Radha is at home. Seeing both in a single day from Vrindavan is possible, and it is a lovely long day if it is planned with care.
It is said that a day in Braj is measured not by what you see but by what you feel. Here is how to see these two and still feel something.
Who this plan suits
It suits fit adults, families with older children and anyone who has already seen the Vrindavan temples and wants the hills. It does not suit very young children, frail elders or anyone who dislikes early mornings.
A full Govardhan parikrama is not part of this plan. It takes 6 to 8 hours on foot, or 3 to 4 hours by e-rickshaw with stops, and cannot be combined with Barsana in the same day.
If you want a gentler day, divide it: Govardhan on one morning and Barsana with Nandgaon on another. Many families discover that two half days are far more restful than one marathon, and the road is the same either way.
Distance and time
Govardhan is about 27 km from Banke Bihari, and Barsana about 50 km from Vrindavan. From Govardhan to Barsana is roughly 25 to 30 km by the guide's plan. Check a live map for your date. A morning drive from Vrindavan to Govardhan takes about 45 to 60 minutes.
Total driving for the day is roughly 100 to 110 km, and road time is about 3 hours in all.
The distances shown by different sources vary by a few kilometres, which is common in the villages of Braj. The fare table we use puts Mathura to Govardhan at 25 km, Mathura to Barsana at 43 km and Mathura to Nandgaon at 48 km, while the guide pages give 50 km for Barsana. The difference is the route taken, so leave a margin.
Hour-by-hour plan
Leave Vrindavan by 6 am. Reach Mansi Ganga by about 7, bathe or sprinkle water and take darshan at the Giriraj temple. Visit Daan Ghati and, if the time allows, Radha Kund and Kusum Sarovar. Leave Govardhan by 11, with a light snack on the road.
Reach Barsana by early afternoon, ideally before the Radha Rani temple closes around 2 pm. If you are late, rest and take the evening opening from about 5 pm. Nandgaon, 8 km further, can be left for another day.
Fill your bottle at the start, and eat a light breakfast before you leave. The road from Govardhan to Barsana crosses open countryside with few clean toilets, so use the facilities at the Govardhan chowk before you go. Keep the afternoon free after Barsana, because the return drive in the evening light can be slow.
What to see at each stop
At Govardhan, the story is the lifting of the hill (Bhagavata Purana 10.24 to 10.27). Mansi Ganga is a stepped tank said to be born of Krishna's thought, and Radha Kund is a tank beautiful in the quiet. Kusum Sarovar is a sandstone lake that is peaceful in the evening.
At Barsana, the temple on Bhanugarh has about 200 or more broad steps. Maan Mandir and Rangeeli Mahal are close by.
One more thing to see on the Govardhan side is Daan Ghati, where, by tradition, Krishna and the gopis played their toll game, called daan leela. We have a separate post on it. If you have energy for one more stop at Barsana, Maan Mandir or Rangeeli Mahal is worth the short walk.
Where to eat and rest
Sweet shops along the Mansi Ganga road and chai stalls on the route are enough for the morning. In Barsana, chaat and lassi shops near the temple steps serve a light lunch, and we could not verify named restaurants, so ask your driver. Carry water and fruit.
Rest in the car during the transit, and sit for a few minutes at Radha Kund before the long drive.
Prasad from the temple counters is the safest food, and sweets bought at busy counters are a good second choice. Tell your driver if anyone in the group has a special diet, and he will plan the stops.
Cost shape and what a package includes
A lala:Cab day includes the car and driver for the full day, fuel, tolls and parking, and a local guide on request. Ask for the current quote. Entry to the temples is free, and you pay only small fees for shoe stands, lamps and any boat or e-rickshaw.
Variations: seniors, kids and festival days
For seniors, do only Govardhan in the morning by e-rickshaw and visit Barsana the next day, or watch the temple from below. For children, break the day with a rest at Radha Kund. Avoid Purnima, Sundays and festival days, when roads are closed and crowds are dense. In summer, start before dawn.
