चंद्र सरोवर

Chandra Sarovar (Parasoli)

The moon-lit lake of Parasoli where, by tradition, Krishna danced the Rasa, and where the blind poet Surdas sang.

KundGovardhanRadha-Krishna, Surdas

The story: The Rasa under the autumn moon

On the full-moon night of autumn, Krishna looked at the moon and the blossoming forest and played his flute. The gopis came running, and he danced the Rasa with them (Srimad Bhagavatam 10.29 to 10.33). Local tradition places one of those nights at Parasoli, where a large stepped lake, Chandra Sarovar, reflects the moon.

Parasoli is also where Surdas (c. 1478 to 1583), the blind poet of Krishna, lived and sang for Shrinathji. His simple hut and a memorial are near the lake. He is remembered for the Sur Sagar, with songs of baby Krishna that Braj still sings.
