After a morning in the lanes of Vrindavan, with bells, crowds and the press of the queue, there comes a moment when the heart wants only a quiet room and a warm plate of dal and roti. A homestay is made for that moment.
This guide compares the ways of staying in Braj, explains how to choose by distance and by temperament, and tells honestly what the Laladham homestay offers.
Who a homestay suits
It suits families, couples and senior yatris who want food cooked the way it is at home, a host who answers the phone, and a little privacy between darshans. It also suits first-time visitors from abroad, who often need someone to explain the day.
It suits less those who want a swimming pool, a lift to every floor or a large restaurant, since homestays are small by nature.
Homestay, ashram, dharamshala or hotel
A homestay is a few rooms in or near a family home, with home-cooked food and personal attention. An ashram or a temple guest house, such as the one at ISKCON, offers simple rooms, a spiritual routine and strict rules. A dharamshala is a pilgrim hostel, plain and low in cost, often with older buildings and stairs. A hotel gives the most facilities and the least intimacy.
Each has its place. The question to ask is what you need after the temple: silence, food, a lift or a view.
Dharamshalas are the oldest kind of pilgrim lodging in Braj, often built and endowed by merchant families for yatris of their own community. They are modest and good value, but bathrooms may be shared and some have stairs only, so ask about the floor and the lift before you go.
Location logic: distance to the temples
In Vrindavan the old town around Banke Bihari, Radha Vallabh, Nidhivan and Seva Kunj is walkable, but cars cannot enter its lanes. ISKCON and Prem Mandir are about 4 km from Banke Bihari, and the Chhatikara road side has hotels with parking. Mathura is about 12 km away and Delhi airport about 175 km.
Choose by what you will do most. If you plan many short darshans, stay near the old town. If you travel with elders and a car, a place with easy road access may serve you better.
Think also about time. A homestay close to the lanes saves the morning walk, while a place on the road side saves the evening drive. Ask your host how long it takes to reach the main temples at the hour you plan to go, and not at noon. For Laladham, which stands in Braj a short drive from the temples and ghats.
The Laladham story
Laladham is the homestay run by the lala:Cab family in Braj. The idea is simple: stay like family, eat like home. Between darshans you return to a quiet room, hot water and a warm thali, with a cab and a local guide on call through one phone number.
It is said that in Braj the guest is treated as a form of God, and the line Atithi Devo Bhava is written on our own page. We try to live it in small things, in the way a guest is received, fed and sent off to darshan.
What is included, rules and booking
The stay includes home-cooked sattvik food, served fresh and without onion or garlic by default, clean rooms and bedding, hot water through the day, help with darshan and aarti timings, and a cab and guide on call. Private rooms and dorm beds are offered. A private room with food is Rs 1,500 a day and a dorm bed with food Rs 900, at the rates shown on our homestay page.
Check-in is usually from noon and check-out by 11 am, and we try to adjust for odd-hour trains and flights. Tell us if you need a ground-floor room. Book through the form on the site, and we confirm dates and price by WhatsApp or a call.
Dorm beds suit solo travellers and small groups who simply want a safe, clean bed and food. Rooms suit couples and families. When an elder is travelling with you, tell us in advance so that we can plan the room with you.
Why a homestay with lala:Cab
Because the stay and the ride are one thing. The same people who greet you at the gate arrange the airport pickup, the early drive to the Janmabhoomi and the guide for the Govardhan walk. There is no need to explain your plan three times to three people.
It also means fewer surprises. Fares are fixed and stated clearly before you travel, and the homestay can plan around temple closures and festival restrictions.
