When a son or daughter books a stay for ageing parents, the question is not the star rating. It is whether the room has a step at the door, whether the toilet is a seat or a squat, whether the dining hall is on the same floor, and how far the car can come.
A good stay for elders is one in which they do not have to think about the building. Here is how to find that.
Who this guide suits
It is for families bringing parents or grandparents to Braj, especially those over seventy, those with knee or heart problems and those who use a stick or a wheelchair. It is also for the one who books, often from another city, who cannot see the building.
If you are travelling with elders, read it alongside our senior citizen yatra post and the wheelchair guide.
Think also of the person who will look after the elder. A caregiver needs a bed nearby, a place to wash and tea at odd hours. Choose a room with two beds or an extra mattress, so that no one has to sleep in another room and worry.
Options explained
A homestay offers a family atmosphere, home-cooked food and a host who answers the phone, but it may be small, with few lifts. A temple guest house, such as ISKCON, has level floors, clean toilets and a calm routine, but needs booking in advance and keeps rules. A dharamshala is plain and low in cost, often with stairs. A hotel may have a lift, a restaurant and parking, but may be farther from the temples.
No type is best for everyone. The test is the room, the floor and the distance, and not the label.
In practice, a place with an easy ground-floor room, an attached seat-type bathroom and a dining space on the same floor is worth more than a grand lobby. Photographs of the actual room and bathroom, sent by the host on WhatsApp, are the most honest guide you will get from far away.
Location logic: distance to the temples
The old town around Banke Bihari can be walked, but cars cannot enter it and the lanes are crowded and uneven, so a stay inside the lanes is hard for elders. ISKCON is about 4 km from Banke Bihari and 1.8 km from Prem Mandir, with level ground and easy car access. The Chhatikara road side has hotels with parking.
A good rule is to choose a stay where the car can reach the door, and then go to the old lanes by car and e-rickshaw for short visits.
If your parents tire quickly, divide the days: a morning darshan, a long rest and a short evening visit. A stay that is ten minutes from the car park suits this rhythm far better than one that is forty minutes from the nearest temple.
Questions to ask before you book
Ask these points plainly, and ask for photos by WhatsApp.
- Is there a ground floor room, or a working lift to the room?
- Is there a step at the entrance and at the bathroom door?
- Is the toilet a seat type, and are there grab rails and hot water?
- Is food served on the same floor, and is it without onion and garlic if needed?
- Can the car park at the door, and how far is the nearest temple?
- Is there a generator or inverter for power cuts?
- Is it quiet at night, or is it near a loud lane or a procession route?
Rules, timings and booking
Check-in is often from noon and check-out by 11 am, though homestays can sometimes adjust. Ask about early arrival after a night journey, since elders may need a room to lie down. Gate closing times matter for the early temple routine.
Book well ahead in Kartik, around Diwali, at Holi and at Janmashtami, when rooms fill and prices rise.
Elders often need a quiet room, and Vrindavan is rarely silent. Festival processions, loud kirtan from a neighbouring ashram and early-morning bells are part of the town. Ask for a room at the back of the building, and carry earplugs for light sleepers.

Check-in is usually from noon and check-out by 11 am, and we try to adjust for odd-hour trains and flights.
