Twice a month, on the eleventh tithi of each lunar fortnight, much of Braj goes quiet at the table. Grains and pulses are set aside, plates become simpler, and a pilgrim who arrives on an Ekadashi finds the shops and the temples keeping a different rhythm. It is a day of fasting, and of a particular kind of food.
It is said that in Vrindavan even a cup of milk on Ekadashi tastes of devotion. Here is what to look for, and what to ask.
What Ekadashi is and what is eaten
Ekadashi is the eleventh day of the waxing and waning moon, kept by many Vaishnavas with fasting. The rules vary by family and tradition. Some fast completely, some take only water, and others eat fruit, milk and certain flours. Typical fasting foods are fruit, milk and curd, potatoes, sabudana, kuttu (buckwheat) and singhara (water chestnut) flour, rock salt and nuts.
Grains such as rice and wheat, pulses and usually onion and garlic are avoided. We give general practice, not a ruling. Ask your own tradition or priest for the rule you follow.
In Braj, the day also has a quieter side. Many local families do not cook at all on Ekadashi, and shops that usually sell kachori and puri keep to sweets and milk. A visitor who arrives hungry at noon may find fewer choices than usual, which is a reason to plan.
Where to eat: leads from our research
We have no verified list of Ekadashi menus in Vrindavan. Our research file names places that claim sattvik food: Govinda's Restaurant at ISKCON, Annakoot Restaurant at the Vrindavan Chandrodaya Mandir, and The Royal Braj opposite Prem Mandir. These are the venues' own claims, and we have not confirmed what they serve on Ekadashi, so call ahead.
In the Banke Bihari lanes and in Loi Bazaar, stalls sell fruit, rabri and sweets made of milk. A tour-operator guide gives the ISKCON prasadam hall as serving free prasadam until about 9:30 am, with donation optional, but we cannot say if it is grain-free on Ekadashi. Ask at the hall.
How to eat safely and sattvik
Ask directly: does this dish have any grain, pulse, onion or garlic, and was it cooked in oil shared with other food? Choose items cooked in front of you, and avoid pre-made packets, since flours can be mixed. Drink sealed water, and choose fruit you peel yourself.
A good, plain meal on Ekadashi is fruit and milk in the morning, a potato and sabudana dish at midday, and a light snack in the evening. Take small portions, since fasting changes appetite.
Hospitality is an old art here. If you tell your host that you are fasting, they will often produce a plate of fruit and some warm milk without being asked, and will not charge much for it. A kind word of thanks goes further than a long list of requests.
Sweets and street food, with care
Peda, rabri and milk sweets are made of milk and sugar and are often accepted on a fast, but some shops add flour, so ask. Jalebi and kachori are made of wheat or pulses and are not for the day. Kulhad lassi is a safe, cooling choice.
Buy sweets from a busy counter and check for freshness. Our Mathura peda post explains how.
A word on thandai, the spiced milk of the Holi season. It may be offered on fasting days too, and in some stalls with bhang. Always ask for it without. Almond milk and plain milk with saffron are safer, and warm in winter.
Prices and timings, as last checked
A commercial guide gave the Govinda's thali at Rs 150 to 350 and breakfast at Rs 80 to 150, but a thali may not suit a fast. Opening hours listed were breakfast 7:30 to 10, lunch 12 to 3 and dinner 7 to 9. These come from one commercial source and should be confirmed locally.
Ekadashi dates change each fortnight, so check a panchang. Dev Uthani Ekadashi, when the Lord is said to wake, falls this Kartik on 20 November 2026 and is a major one in Braj, and the Mathura parikrama is walked around it.
Break the fast the next morning with simple food, and avoid a heavy meal first thing. Many in Braj break it with a little prasad and a glass of water, then a light meal.
