In a land of Krishna, the Goddess has her own quiet place. Every Navratri, women of Braj walk to a small temple in Radha Bagh where, the old stories say, the gopis once prayed for Krishna as their husband. They carry coconuts, red scarves and a vow, and in the nine nights the little shrine glows.
It is said that Braj never forgot the goddess who answered the first prayer. Here is how Navratri is kept.
What the festival is and why Braj celebrates it
Navratri is the nine nights of the Goddess, kept twice a year, in spring (Chaitra) and in autumn (Sharad). In Braj, the story that belongs to the season is the vow of the gopis. In the cold month of Hemanta, the young gopis made a clay image of Katyayani on the Yamuna bank, bathed each morning, sang her praise and prayed that Nanda's son might be their husband. After a month, Krishna came to the bank (Bhagavata Purana 10.22).
The Bhagavatam gives the prayer in its first verses: Katyayani, great illusion, great yogini, lady of all, make the son of Nanda my husband, I bow to you (10.22.4).
There is a charm in this story for young women especially. Their vow was made in the cold, at dawn, with clay and sincerity, and the answer came, as the Bhagavatam says, after a month. Many girls and their mothers in Braj still go to the peeth in Navratri to pray for a good home and a gentle heart.
Dates and the build-up
Sources we found list Chaitra Navratri beginning on Wednesday, 7 April 2027, and Sharad Navratri around 30 September 2027, with some calendars listing 1 October. The dates are provisional, so confirm with a panchang. The 2026 autumn Navratri has already passed.
The build-up includes cleaning of temples, the sowing of barley shoots in homes, and fasting. Crowds grow through the nine nights, with the peak on Ashtami and Navami.
Katyayani Peeth in Vrindavan
The Katyayani Peeth lies in Radha Bagh on the Chhatikara road in Vrindavan. By common accounts, the present temple was built in 1923 by Swami Keshavananda. Devotees also say that this is the Shakti Peeth where Sati's hair fell, according to Shakti Peeth tradition. Not every list names Vrindavan, so please treat that as local belief.
Prem Mandir is about 3 km away and ISKCON 2.5 km. Indicative hours are about 5:00 am to 12:00 pm and 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm in summer, and about 5:30 am to 12:00 pm and 3:30 pm to 8:30 pm in winter.
The courtyard has a garden, and a Shiva and a Hanuman shrine. Carry small change for flowers and coconuts, and ask a priest, if you wish, to narrate the vow. The temple is busy in the nine days, and the morning is calmer than the evening.
Mathura Devi temples
Mathura has temples to the Goddess as well, but we could not verify their names, histories or timings from reliable sources for this post. Ask your driver or guide, and treat any name offered as a lead to check. We do not wish to invent a list.
If you are in Mathura during Navratri, the Janmabhoomi and Dwarkadhish keep their usual routine, and the Goddess shrines draw local worshippers early in the morning.
Day-by-day schedule and crowd plan
Expect morning and evening aarti, special decoration and fasting through the nine days. Ashtami and Navami bring the heaviest crowds.
Wear shoes you can remove easily, dress modestly and carry water. Roads around the peeth may be congested, and parking on the approach fills quickly.
The two Navratri seasons fall in different weather. In April, the heat is rising and morning is the best hour. In autumn, it is humid after the rains, and evenings are pleasant. Plan accordingly, and rest in the afternoon.
Where to stay and when to book
Navratri is not as heavy as Holi or Janmashtami in Braj, but weekends fill. Book early for the Ashtami weekend. The Laladham homestay offers a quiet base, and lala:Cab can plan the day around the peeth and the other temples.
Food of the day and cab support
Many families fast through Navratri, eating fruit, milk, sabudana and kuttu dishes, and avoiding grains, onion and garlic. Temple prasad and the sattvik thalis at ISKCON and Prem Mandir suit fasting better than street food. See our Ekadashi food post for the dishes of a fast.
A lala:Cab driver can reach the peeth by the quiet route, and a guide can recount, on the spot, what the gopis asked for.
