Kanpur to Vrindavan: the Ganga plains to the Yamuna

About 330 to 350 km6 to 9 hours by train7 to 8 hours by cab

Kanpur sits on the Ganga, and Braj lies on the Yamuna. The two are a day's journey apart, and the main line between them is among the busiest in India. That works to your advantage: you will never lack a train.

By train

Aggregator pages list dozens of weekly trains to Mathura Junction, with a fastest direct running time around 6 hours. The Prayagraj to Mathura service (12403) is named as the fastest option from Kanpur Anwarganj. Another source gives roughly 9 hours as typical across departures.

That spread is the honest answer. A convenient time and berth matter more than the minutes. Check IRCTC for your date and choose an overnight departure if you want to save a day.

By road

Aggregator sites give a distance of this order with an estimated 7 to 7.5 hours by car, often via Etawah and Agra. The road a driver picks depends on the day, so treat the time as an estimate.

A cab makes sense for a family of four or more, or for elders who dislike station chaos. You are door to door, and the same driver continues to Govardhan and Barsana.

Break the drive at Agra if you want. The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays.

Flying

Kanpur has limited air links. Many travellers fly from Lucknow to Delhi instead, then take a cab for the last three and a half hours. Unless you are already near Lucknow, the train is simpler.

A plan for three days

  • Day 1: arrive by morning train, Vrindavan temples, evening aarti.
  • Day 2: Mathura, Gokul and the Yamuna ghats.
  • Day 3: Govardhan parikrama and Barsana.

Kanpur pilgrims and Braj

Kanpur has a strong ISKCON and Radha Vallabh following, and many families arrive for Kartik. Some come after a Ganga snan at Bithoor or Prayagraj, and the connection of Ganga and Yamuna at the end of a larger pilgrimage circuit is natural.

Kanpur Central and Anwarganj

Kanpur has more than one station, and trains to Mathura can leave from Central or Anwarganj. Check your ticket carefully, and allow extra time for the traffic around the Mall Road area. Tell us the station and the coach, and we plan the pickup on the Mathura side.

If you drive, the highway south passes Etawah, Firozabad and Agra. The Taj lies close enough to add a short stop, but weigh it against your energy before you reach Braj.

Kanpur food and gentle habits

Pilgrims from Kanpur often travel with a small tiffin and a thermos, which is a sensible habit. Laladham welcomes this, and the kitchen is glad to cook for fasts and special diets.

Temples worth their time

Vrindavan rewards a slow order. Banke Bihari opens with curtains drawn and redrawn, Radha Raman has a self-manifested deity of old, and Radha Vallabh keeps a very distinct tradition of song. Give each a calm hour rather than racing a list.

Prem Mandir is best at dusk, when its lights come on, and the ISKCON temple at its aarti hours.
