Why we suggest flying
Rome2rio lists a daily direct service from Bhubaneswar to Mathura Junction that takes about 35 hours 45 minutes. Virail gives about 35 hours 18 minutes. That is two nights on a train.
Biju Patnaik Airport has non-stop flights to Delhi, typically between two and three hours. With the cab to Vrindavan, you can reach in a day instead of two and a half.
If you prefer the train
Plan for a long journey with proper food and entertainment. Aggregators show about two departures a day, though I did not verify specific train numbers. Check IRCTC for the current Odisha to Delhi services that pass Mathura.
Jagannath and Krishna
In Puri, Jagannath appears as Krishna with Balabhadra and Subhadra. In Braj, Balarama is remembered at Dauji and Baldeo, and Krishna's childhood is in Gokul and Vrindavan. A guide who tells both traditions makes the connection clear. Pilgrims often ask about Radha-Krishna songs in Odia, such as the Gita Govinda of Jayadeva, which is sung in both lands.
A four day plan
- Day 1: arrive, rest, evening aarti.
- Day 2: Mathura, Gokul and Baldeo.
- Day 3: Govardhan and Radha Kund.
- Day 4: Barsana and Nandgaon.
Season and clothing
Winters in Braj are colder than Odisha's. Carry layers. Summer is harsh, and a mid-year trip means early starts. October to March is best.
What to do on the long train
If you choose the train, treat it as a retreat. Carry a copy of the Gita Govinda or Jagannath ashtakam, a light blanket, and food from home. The ride crosses the Gangetic plains in daylight on one stretch, so keep your window seat for that.
Elders may like a halt at Gaya, Prayagraj or Kashi on the way, breaking the journey into two halves. We can arrange the Mathura end of this.
Landing in Delhi
If you fly, your cab driver waits at the arrivals gate with a name board. Delhi traffic can be heavy, so the drive may take longer than four hours in the evening. The Odia kitchen's flavours may be missed, so carry a few favourite pickles or snacks.
Rath Yatra and Braj
Odia pilgrims are fond of the Rath Yatra, and Vrindavan has its own chariot procession at the Rangji temple during its annual Brahmotsav. Ask us for the calendar and we can help you time your visit to a festival you will recognise.
