In Mauritius, the names of Radha and Krishna are sung in homes and temples across the island, and for many families Vrindavan is the home of the songs, a place their grandparents spoke of. A journey to Braj is less a trip to a foreign country than a visit to the source of something one already knows.
It is said that a pilgrim from far away carries the whole village with him. Here is how to prepare for a trip that carries many.
Who this is for
This post is for pilgrims from Mauritius, whether on a first visit to India or a return to family roots. Our research shows that Mauritius is a small market, with about 2,400 English searches a month for Mathura, Vrindavan and Braj, but a distinctive one. Searches from Mauritius include cab and fare phrases that other foreign markets lack, such as Vrindavan to Delhi cab, Delhi to Vrindavan taxi fare and Delhi to Vrindavan cab price, and interest in ISKCON Vrindavan is high.
Interest runs from September to January, which includes the Kartik season.
Many Mauritian visitors are of Indian descent and travel with several generations at once. A cab with room for everyone, grandparents included, and a driver who is patient with questions, is therefore the right start. Say how many you are and what each needs when you book.
What to know before you fly
You will fly into Delhi, which is about 170 to 175 km from Vrindavan, a drive of roughly three hours on the Yamuna Expressway. We have not verified flight routes from Mauritius, so check your airline for connections.
Visa and entry rules change, and they differ for citizens, for people of Indian origin and for card holders. Please check the Indian government's official e-visa and OCI information and your airline before you buy tickets, and carry a passport valid well beyond your stay. Also arrange travel insurance, and ask your doctor about vaccinations.
Time zone and the cab from the airport
India is on UTC+5:30 and Mauritius on UTC+4, so India is one and a half hours ahead. Jet lag from this direction is mild, but the flight itself is long. Plan a gentle first day.
A pre-booked cab from Delhi airport is the simplest start. A fair booking names the vehicle, the pick-up point and the all-in fare with tolls. At lala:Cab, fixed fares between Delhi airport and Vrindavan are shown on the site. Share your flight number so that the driver tracks delays, and ask for the driver's name and number before you land.
Kartik and where to stay
Kartik in 2026 is the month of lamps, running into late November, and by one source Kartik Purnima falls on 24 November (confirm locally). Diwali is on 8 November and Dev Uthani Ekadashi on 20 November. This is the busiest month for pilgrims, with daily lamp offerings, the Damodarashtakam, and special programmes at ISKCON and Radha Damodar. See our Kartik post for details.
ISKCON Vrindavan has a guest house that must be booked in advance through the temple office, and we could not confirm an official online booking page. The MVT guest house is a separate ISKCON-linked place, popular with foreign visitors. The Laladham homestay is another calm option.
Weather in Kartik is pleasant, with cool mornings and evenings and mild days. Fog starts toward the end of November, so mornings on the road may be slower, and a light shawl is welcome at 4 am for the mangala aarti.
On the ground: etiquette, food and money
Dress modestly, remove shoes at temple gates and keep your voice low. Phones and electronics are not allowed inside Krishna Janmabhoomi, and a paid cloakroom is outside. Begin with a trusted sattvik meal, such as Govinda's at ISKCON, and drink sealed water.
Carry small cash in rupees for parking, shoe stands and tea. How exchange works, and whether Mauritian cards are accepted in India, we cannot say; ask your bank. Pandas and touts may press for fees, and you can decline kindly.
Mauritian visitors often bring family gifts for relatives in India, and take home prasad, malas and books. Carry only what you can lift, keep gifts in hand luggage if fragile and check your airline's baggage rules for liquids and sweets.
A sample plan
Day 1: arrive in Delhi and drive to Vrindavan, rest. Day 2: ISKCON, with mangala aarti at about 4:30 am if you can, and Prem Mandir at dusk. Day 3: Banke Bihari at opening, Radha Raman, Radha Damodar for the lamp offering. Day 4: Mathura and Gokul. Day 5: Govardhan and Barsana. Day 6: return to Delhi, with a margin before your flight.
Add days if you wish to walk the Govardhan parikrama or stay for the whole month.
