The train slows, the platform sign says Mathura Junction, and a whole carriage of pilgrims reaches for its bags at once. For most of them the next question is the same: how do we reach Vrindavan from here, and how much will it cost to find out?
The distance is short, but the first half hour after a long train journey is when travellers are most tired and most easily rushed. This guide gives you the numbers, the ways of going and a plain plan so that arrival is gentle.
Distance and time
The short answer is about 12 km by road, 30 to 45 minutes by taxi. Sources differ, giving about 10 to 15 km, and our guide data gives roughly 13 to 14 km and 30 to 45 minutes from the station to the Banke Bihari area, about 12 km and 25 to 40 minutes to ISKCON, and about 11 km and 25 to 40 minutes to Prem Mandir. One listing gives 20 to 30 minutes by road in light traffic. The last kilometre inside Vrindavan can take as long as the first ten, so please check a live map.
If you arrive on a major festival, the figures above do not apply. Janmashtami, Holi and the Kartik parikrama days bring checkposts, closed roads and long walks, and the station itself becomes crowded. Plan for an extra hour or two, keep your luggage small and ask your driver where the nearest permitted drop is. On such days, a booked car waiting at a known point is worth much more than a rickshaw hunted in a crowd.
Route options and road conditions
The road linking the two towns is a busy main road that passes the Rangji Mandir area on its way into the town. It is crowded at festival times and slows in the evening, and on Janmashtami, Holi and other big days checkposts and barricades appear. Your driver will know which road is open. In the fog months, allow extra time.
Taxi, e-rickshaw, train: an honest comparison
After a long journey a taxi is easiest, especially with luggage, elders or children. It takes you straight to the lot nearest your stay, and you decide the stops. A shared auto or e-rickshaw is cheaper; one listing quotes roughly Rs 30 to 50 a seat for a shared ride, though no verified rate exists, and the last mile can be slow in a crowd. Settle the price before you sit.
You may read that a local train runs between the two towns. It did, on an 11 km metre-gauge branch opened in 1889, but that line has been closed since 17 March 2023 for gauge conversion, and a 2025 PTI report says a plan to replace it with a road drew protests. No train runs on it now, and no passenger can board at Vrindavan station. Older web pages still list services, so treat them as out of date.
If you are travelling with elders or a lot of luggage, a taxi is the kind choice. If you are a light traveller with time, a shared ride is the cheap way, and gives a first view of the fields and the town. Whichever you choose, keep your phone charged and your bags in your own sight.
What a fair booking looks like
At the station, a few drivers will call out for you. Choose one who quotes the full fare before you move, for the whole car, with parking and waiting included. Better, book in advance by phone or message, and let the driver meet you at the exit with your name. Agree the drop point: the lane to many temples and stays is closed to cars, and your driver may stop at a lot and you walk or ride the rest.
Check that the car has space for your luggage and a working air conditioner or heater. Share your train number so the driver can follow delays, and ask for a driver's phone number. Pay after the ride, in the amount agreed.
Arrival plan in Braj
Arrive and rest. Drink water, wash and eat something light, then walk to the nearest evening aarti. Do not plan a long first outing. If you reach Mathura in the morning, you can visit the Krishna Janmabhoomi, which is about 3.5 km away, before going on to Vrindavan, but only if your luggage is in the car and you are not too tired. Leave your phone with the driver for the Janmabhoomi.
If you reach at night, go straight to your stay, and begin the next morning. The Laladham homestay can be booked together with a lala:Cab pickup at the station.
On arrival at your stay, check the room, ask for the host's phone number, and note the nearest hospital and pharmacy. These small steps take two minutes and make the rest of the stay easier. Then sleep. Braj will still be there in the morning.
