Distance and road
Wikipedia gives Gokul as 15 km south-east of Mathura in one line and 10 km in another, and Wikivoyage says 10 km east. The difference depends on whether you measure from the town centre, the Janmabhoomi or the railway station. We plan around 15 km, which is the safer number for timing. The Yamuna Expressway and the Taj Expressway run nearby.
Roads near the river can flood a little in heavy monsoon, so ask the driver about conditions in July and August. The drive is short, but the lanes inside Gokul are narrow, and the car usually stops at an agreed point from where you walk to the ghat.
By bus or shared vehicle
UPSRTC buses run between Mathura and Gokul, according to Wikipedia. Shared autos and tempos also ply the route, but we do not have a verified timetable. Expect to wait until a vehicle fills, and expect the last ride back to leave early. If you are with children or elders, a cab that waits is far kinder.
What to see in Gokul
Our temple guide has a page for each place, with the story and the practical details.
- Govind Ghat, also called Thakurani Ghat, the main bathing ghat on the river.
- Gokulnath Haveli, maintained by the Pushtimarg tradition.
- Nand Bhawan, the home of Nanda Baba, with a long view over the river.
- Raman Reti, the sandy bank where Krishna is said to have played, and Brahmand Ghat nearby.
Mahavan and Baldeo
In older texts Gokul and Mahavan were one place. Today Mahavan is a separate village close by, known for the Chaurasi Khamba, the eighty-four pillars hall. Baldeo, with its Dauji temple, lies a bit farther. You can add them if you have the afternoon.
Best hour and how long
Morning light on the river is the best, so leave Mathura by 8 am. Plan around three hours in Gokul itself, and add one more for Mahavan. Midday heat from April to June is harsh on the ghat steps. In rain the river road can be muddy.
Getting around once you arrive
Gokul is spread along the river with narrow lanes between the temples, so cars stop at a few points and you walk the rest. Wear comfortable footwear and keep time for the steps down to the ghat.
If you like to hear the stories, a local guide is a quiet help here. They can show you where Nanda's house stood, where Yashoda churned butter and where the cowherds gathered. Fix the length of the tour in advance.
A half day, step by step
A simple plan: after breakfast, drive to Gokul and reach by 9. Spend the first hour at the river steps, the second at Nand Bhawan and the haveli, and the third at Raman Reti. Lunch can be a thali at a plain place near the main lane.
If energy remains, Mahavan is next on the road. Return to Mathura by early afternoon, rest, and keep the evening for Vishram Ghat. The pace is gentle, and children and elders usually manage it well.
- Exact Mathura to Gokul distance and time from your starting point.
- Bus and shared-vehicle timings, and the last return ride.
