Date for 2027
Janmashtami falls on Wednesday 25 August 2027, according to the sources we checked on 23 Oct 2026. The Ashtami tithi runs from the evening of 24 August to the afternoon of 25 August, and the midnight celebrations come in the night of 25 to 26 August. Temples announce their own schedules, so confirm locally.
What happens where
- Krishna Janmabhoomi, Mathura: the main midnight celebration, with abhishek and aarti. Entry is by long, security-checked queues, and phones and bags are generally not allowed inside.
- Dwarkadhish, Mathura: beautiful decorations and swings.
- Vrindavan: Banke Bihari offers mangala aarti only once a year, on Janmashtami morning. Queues are enormous.
- ISKCON Vrindavan: kirtan, abhishek and a late night aarti.
- Gokul and Nandgaon: Nandotsav the next day, with songs and distribution of gifts.
Practical planning
We follow the path Krishna gave in the Gita: dharma at each place, and responsibility for everything we promise. On Janmashtami that means a driver who knows where the cars must stop, and a plan that keeps your family together.
- Book a room and a cab 2 to 3 months ahead.
- Expect road closures and parking far from the temples. Wear comfortable shoes you can slip off.
- Carry water, light snacks and a small torch.
- Do not carry valuables into crowds.
