Chennai to Vrindavan: from Kapaleeshwarar to Krishna's Braj

Fly to Delhi in under three hoursGrand Trunk Express runs a day and a halfCab Delhi to Vrindavan 3 to 3.5 hours

Few journeys in India cross as much country as Chennai to Mathura. But the south has a deep bond with Braj, from Andal's songs to the Alwars, and families from Tamil Nadu travel up every year. The way you choose to cross decides how much you enjoy the yatra.

Flying is the sensible choice

Non-stop flights between Chennai and Delhi are operated by several airlines, and the flight time is listed at roughly 2 hours 45 minutes to 2 hours 55 minutes. A pre-booked cab waiting at Delhi Airport reaches Vrindavan in about three and a half hours. Starting from a morning flight, you can be at an evening aarti the same day.

If you land late at night, ask us to hold the room at Laladham. You sleep, and the first darshan waits for the next morning.

The Grand Trunk Express

The Grand Trunk Express (12615) is a daily train that ends its long run at Mathura Junction. Sources list a departure around 18:15 to 19:15 and an arrival around 02:35 to 03:35 two nights later, a journey of 32 to 33 hours. The Andaman Express (16031) is a second direct option on certain days.

This is the right choice if you travel with elders who prefer trains, or if you want to see the country slowly. Book an AC class well ahead, and carry food for the long stretches through Madhya Pradesh.

A 3 am arrival at Mathura is hard on elders. Tell us the train and we will have a driver and a ready room.

The Alwar and Andal link

Andal's Tiruppavai describes Gokul and Vrindavan with great tenderness, and several Alwars sang of Mathura and Govardhan. Tamil pilgrims often ask to see these places through those verses. Our guides tell the leelas in simple Hindi and English, and we are happy to include your own recitation at a quiet ghat.

A four day plan

  • Day 1: land in Delhi, drive to Vrindavan, evening aarti.
  • Day 2: Mathura, Vishram Ghat, Dwarkadhish, Gokul.
  • Day 3: Govardhan parikrama and Radha Kund.
  • Day 4: Barsana and Nandgaon, return to Delhi for the evening flight.

Practicalities for southern travellers

Delhi winters surprise Chennai visitors. From December to February, mornings are cold and foggy, and flights into Delhi can be delayed. Carry a woollen layer even for a short trip.

Food is the other concern. Laladham serves home-cooked sattvik meals, and we can ask the kitchen to go easy on spice and prepare rice-based dishes where possible.

Airport day and the first evening

If your flight lands in the afternoon, you can reach Vrindavan before dark and visit the ISKCON temple for evening aarti. For a late night landing, we suggest sleeping at Laladham and visiting temples the next morning. The Delhi leg is better after sleep than after a long day.

Carry a small shawl for the cold, as the Delhi airport and the car ride are both air conditioned and chilly.

South Indian food in Braj

Braj food leans on wheat, dal, curd and sweets. If you miss rice, ask for plain rice and curd at Laladham. Filter coffee is rarer, so a small flask from home is a clever idea.

Our approach

lala:Cab tries to keep dharma and responsibility close, as Krishna asks in the Gita. That means flight tracking, a waiting driver, and a human answer on WhatsApp.
