Lucknow to Vrindavan: distance, route, train and cab

From Lucknow, the road to Braj runs west across the plain of Uttar Pradesh, past fields and small towns, and ends at the Yamuna. It is a long drive, but a simple one, and many families make it in a day. One night in the temple town, a morning of darshan and the return the next day is the usual shape of the trip.

It is said that a long road makes the arrival sweeter. Here is how to plan it.

Distance and time

The road to Mathura is roughly 390 to 420 km, and the figure shifts with the planner you ask. One route planner gives 387.7 km and 4 hours 25 minutes, and another gives 419 km and nearly 6 hours. Vrindavan adds about 12 km. Plan for most of a morning and some of the afternoon with stops, longer in fog or heavy traffic, and look at a live map on the day.

The sources disagree because routes and speeds differ, so treat these as a range.

If you travel with elders, it is wise to treat the day as two parts: the road in the morning with a long lunch stop, and darshan in the late afternoon and evening. Do not plan a heavy darshan the same afternoon as a six-hour drive.

Route options and road conditions

We have not verified the routing, but the common choice is via Agra, joining the national highway near Mathura. Roads change, and expressway links have opened in recent years, so ask your driver for the best route on the day. In winter fog, drive in daylight and allow extra time.

Long highway drives need breaks. Plan a halt every two hours, at a place with clean toilets and sattvik food, and tell your driver if you eat no onion or garlic.

Keep an eye on the weather as well. In the monsoon, heavy rain on the highway slows traffic, and in summer the heat makes long drives tiring. Winter fog is the main challenge, and a late morning start may be better on foggy days.

Cab, train and bus: an honest comparison

Rome2Rio shows a direct service from Lucknow to Mathura that departs once a week and takes about 7 hours 53 minutes, and another site lists a direct train at about 8 hours 33 minutes. A rail site gives the distance as 404 km in about 7 hours 15 minutes for the fastest service. These are snapshots and may be out of date, so check IRCTC.

Buses are listed at about 6 hours 44 minutes direct from Alambagh, and about 7 hours 30 minutes via Agra. A private cab is usually faster than both, and door to door.

A train can be a comfortable way to travel if you secure a berth, and a late-night train can save a hotel night. However, the schedule listings differ and the direct service may run only on certain days, so confirm the day before you book anything else. Remember that the train ends at Mathura Junction: the last 12 km to Vrindavan are by road, a cab of 30 to 45 minutes, since the old rail line between the two towns has been closed since March 2023.

What a fair booking looks like

A fair booking names the vehicle, the route, the return plan and the total fare with tolls and driver allowance. For a two-day trip, ask how the driver's night halt is handled. lala:Cab states outstation fares before you travel, so ask for the current quote from Lucknow, since our fixed table covers Delhi routes.

Choose a car size that suits your group and bags. Elders will prefer a sedan or a 7-seater for comfort.

Discuss in advance whether the same car will take you around Braj on the next day. A driver who knows the lanes of Mathura and Vrindavan is worth more than a faster car, and a combined fare for the whole trip can be simpler than separate bookings.

Leave Lucknow by 5 or 6 am to reach Mathura by late morning and have the afternoon rest.

Arrival plan in Braj

If you arrive by late morning, begin with Krishna Janmabhoomi, where phones are not allowed inside, then Vishram Ghat and lunch. Rest in the afternoon, since most temples close, and go to Vrindavan in the evening for ISKCON or Prem Mandir. Keep Banke Bihari for the next morning.

If you arrive late at night, go straight to your stay, and see the temples in the morning.

Whichever mode you choose, carry copies of your booking and a light shawl. Evenings in Braj cool quickly in winter, and the temple floors are cold when you take off your shoes.

A last note for the road: keep your driver's phone number, your booking message and a printout of your stay's address in the car. Phone batteries run low on long days, and a paper copy never fails.
