Sometimes all you have is a half day: a gap between meetings, a layover, an afternoon between two cities. Vrindavan can be met in four or five hours, if you accept that you will not see everything and choose three places to see well.
The three most visited are Banke Bihari, ISKCON and Prem Mandir. They are far enough apart that the order matters, and the opening hours decide the rest. Here are two simple versions, one for the morning and one for the afternoon.
Who this plan suits
It suits first-timers with a half day, travellers on a Delhi-Agra circuit who stop at Vrindavan, and families who want a short, gentle darshan. It does not suit anyone hoping for a full day of lanes, ghats and groves.
Half a day also means being honest about what you leave. Nidhivan, Seva Kunj, Radha Raman, Radha Vallabh, the ghats and the groves will wait for your next visit. Many people say that leaving something unseen is what makes them return, and in Braj returning is the whole idea.
Timings
These are indicative hours from our guide data. Banke Bihari opens roughly at 7:45 am to noon and 5:30 to 9:30 pm in summer, and 8:45 am to 1:00 pm and 4:30 to 8:30 pm in winter. ISKCON is roughly 4:30 am to 1:00 pm, closed for the afternoon rest, then reopens at about 4:00 or 4:30 pm until 8:15 or 8:30 pm. Prem Mandir is roughly 8:30 in the morning until noon, then 4:30 to 8:30 pm, with the lights after dusk. Please check locally on the day.
Morning version, about 8:00 am to 12:30 pm
Start at Banke Bihari right as the doors open, when the crowd is thinnest. Leave your phone and big bag in the car, since phones are widely restricted near the deity, and walk or ride from the lot, which is 10 to 20 minutes. Allow an hour and a half to two hours including the walk. Drive about 4 km, 15 to 25 minutes, to ISKCON for the temple and a short rest in the courtyard, and then to Prem Mandir, which is 1.8 km further, for the marble galleries by daylight, before it closes at noon. The light show happens only in the evening, so this version trades the lights for a quiet temple.
Afternoon and evening version, about 4:00 pm to 8:30 pm
Start at ISKCON at four, when it reopens, and take the evening aarti around 6:30 pm in winter or 7:00 pm in summer. Then go to Prem Mandir, arriving about 45 minutes before dusk so that you see it by day and by lights, and stay for the show, around 7:00 in winter and 7:30 in summer. Banke Bihari fits only if you reach it at 4:30 and accept the wait, which can be 30 minutes on a quiet day and several hours on a peak day. We suggest skipping it on Sundays and full-moon days.
If your half day is in summer, prefer the evening version, since temple floors are hot in the afternoon and the midday heat is hard on elders. In winter, the morning has better light and the afternoon version has a longer evening. The car can wait with the air-conditioner or heater on, so the pauses are comfortable.
Travel times
The old town to ISKCON is some 4 km, 15 to 25 minutes. ISKCON to Prem Mandir is about 1.8 km. Prem Mandir back to Banke Bihari is again around 4 km. From Mathura Junction, Banke Bihari is about 13 km, 30 to 45 minutes, and Prem Mandir about 11 km, 25 to 40 minutes. From Delhi airport, expect around 3 hours to Prem Mandir. Check a live map and add time for the last lane.
Where to eat and rest
A sattvik thali at Govinda's inside the ISKCON campus is the easiest meal; hours are listed as around 7:30 to 10 for breakfast, 12 to 3 for lunch and 7 to 9 for dinner by a commercial source, so check locally. Temple lanes sell peda, kachori and rabri, and stalls outside Prem Mandir sell sweets and chaat. See our Vrindavan food guide. If you have a gap, rest in the car or in the ISKCON courtyard, which has toilets and flat floors.
Between the temples, avoid shopping detours that your driver may suggest. A short stop for tea and a rest for the car park is enough. If you wish to buy prasad, buy a small packet of peda or mishri from the temple counter on your way out, rather than carrying boxes through the crowds.
Cost shape and what a package includes
A half-day booking is a car and driver for four to five hours, with parking and tolls clarified, and a guide as an extra line. Entry to all three temples is free. Ask for a written quote and what is included. lala:Cab will confirm the inclusions on WhatsApp so there are no surprises.
Variations: seniors, children and festival days
Elders: only the flat-floored temples, ISKCON first, followed by Prem Mandir, with the car at the gate. Children: ISKCON's courtyard and the Prem Mandir galleries and evening fountains, and skip the Banke Bihari queue. Festival days: on Janmashtami, Holi and big Sundays, expect cars to be held at outer lots and plan only one place. A lala:Cab driver will tell you in advance which lot is in use.
Questions, answered
Can I see Vrindavan in half a day?
You can see three main temples, with no time for the old lanes and groves.
Which temples should I choose?
Banke Bihari for the heart of the town, ISKCON for kirtan and prasadam, Prem Mandir for marble and lights.
Is Prem Mandir free?
Yes. Entry is free, and anyone asking money for direct darshan is a fraud.
What if I have only the evening?
ISKCON at dusk and then Prem Mandir for the show works well.
