Vrindavan for visitors from Germany and the Netherlands

A visitor from Hamburg or Utrecht who arrives in Vrindavan will notice many things at once: the sound of bells, the smell of incense and ghee, the sudden warmth of the air, the brightness of the clothes. They may also notice that the quiet organisation of home has been replaced by a lively improvisation. That is part of the charm, and it is gentler on the traveller who has planned.

This note is for guests from Germany and the Netherlands. It is short on promises and long on practicalities. We do not state visa or health rules, which change, and we send you to official sources for them.

Who this is for

It is for devotees, seekers, families and curious travellers from the two countries. Our research found German-language interest of about 1,400 searches a month and English-language interest of around 4,800 for Germany, and about 3,200 for the Netherlands, estimates of topic size and not of bookings. German searches we noticed are mostly informational, such as the weather and the situation of Vrindavan's widows, and a guesthouse name. The widows are real people, and the subject deserves respect, not curiosity. We say no more about it here.

Weather and seasons

Searches for the weather are among the first things visitors from Europe ask. The plain is hot in summer, from April to June, humid in the monsoon, from July to September, and cool to mild from November to February, with fog on some winter mornings. We have not verified monthly figures from the India Meteorological Department, so look at a live forecast before you pack. For comfort, aim for late autumn to early spring.

Travel from Europe is long, and the change of climate is large. Plan to arrive a day early if you can, and keep the first day light.

People who plan carefully, as many Germans and Dutch do, are often surprised by how much in Braj depends on the day. A temple that opens at eight may open at half past, a road that is open in the morning may be closed by noon, and a festival may change everything. Keep your plan firm in its direction and soft in its timing, and ask your driver each evening what tomorrow looks like.

What to know before you fly

Look up your passport's entry rules on India's official visa site and apply early. We quote none of them here. Speak to a doctor or a travel-health clinic about vaccines and travel medicine for India, and carry a copy of any prescription. Book your first night and your airport pickup before you fly. Delhi is the usual gateway, about 170 to 175 km and around three hours from Vrindavan.

India Standard Time is UTC+5:30, so expect a time difference of several hours from Central European time. Plan your first day around rest, water and light food.

On the ground: etiquette, food, money

Dress in light cotton that covers shoulders and knees. Remove shoes at the temples, keep your voice low and do not photograph the deity. Phones and big bags are not allowed at the Krishna Janmabhoomi and widely restricted at Banke Bihari, so leave them with the driver. Food is vegetarian, often without onion and garlic. Begin with a sattvik meal at Govinda's or MVT and try street food from the second day. Drink sealed water.

Carry small rupee notes for shoe stands, flowers and e-rickshaws. See our practical guide on cash, UPI and SIMs. Germans and Dutch travellers who like planning will appreciate that a firm written quote from a driver, with tolls and parking included, avoids the worst surprises.

Public life in Braj is warm and close. Strangers will speak to you, ask where you are from, and sometimes ask for money or offer to guide you. A friendly greeting and a calm no are enough. Keep the passport itself safe at the stay and carry a photocopy. Walk with your bag in front of you in the lanes. Most days pass without trouble, and the hospitality of the place is real.

Where to stay

ISKCON Vrindavan has a guest house booked in advance through the temple office, and the MVT guest house nearby is popular with foreign guests. Our research also noted a Vrindavan guesthouse name in Portuguese searches; names like this are shared by businesses in other places, so pair any name with Mathura, ISKCON or Prem Mandir. A homestay gives a household feel. The Laladham homestay in Braj, a short walk from the temples and ghats, offers private rooms and dorm beds with home-cooked sattvik food, and a cab and guide on one number; confirm the exact location and details when you book.

Sample plan

A gentle five days: day one rest and ISKCON in the evening; day two Mathura; day three the old town of Vrindavan and Prem Mandir; day four Govardhan and Radha Kund; day five Barsana and Nandgaon, then the road back to Delhi with a margin before your flight. Add a day for Agra if you wish. Keep a rest in the middle of each day, when many temples are closed.

If you are travelling as a couple or a small group of friends and wish for a quieter pace, do fewer places for longer. A morning at one temple, an afternoon rest and an evening at the river is a full day. Slowness is the point of the place, and it opens up once you stop trying to see everything.
