Dev Uthani Ekadashi and the Mathura-Vrindavan parikrama

At the end of the four rainy months, the old belief says, Vishnu wakes from his sleep. The day is called Dev Uthani Ekadashi, the Ekadashi on which the Lord rises. In Mathura and Vrindavan the waking is marked by the walking of thousands, who go barefoot around the twin towns in the cold before dawn.

This is a short guide for the coming days: when it falls, what the parikrama is, and how to join it gently, even if you only walk a part. The festival is only weeks away, so it is time to plan.

What the festival is and why Braj celebrates it

Dev Uthani, or Prabodhini Ekadashi, falls on the eleventh day of the bright half of Kartik. In the common belief Vishnu sleeps from Ashadha Ekadashi and rises on this day, and weddings and auspicious work resume. Two days earlier is Akshaya Navami, when, as we read, the merit of the day is said never to diminish, and pilgrims also walk the circuit of Mathura and Vrindavan on that day.

At Vishram Ghat in Mathura, the start and end of the Mathura parikrama, the largest walk is held around Akshaya Navami and Dev Uthani Ekadashi, according to our guide notes. A dawn bath in the Yamuna, an offering to the river and the Braj dust on the forehead begin the walk, according to a source that describes it.

Dates and the build-up

For 2026 several panchang sites give Dev Uthani Ekadashi on Friday, 20 November, with Tulsi Vivah the day after; Diwali on 8 November and Govardhan Puja on 9 November in the same listings. By the rule that Akshaya Navami falls two days before Dev Uthani, it would be about 18 November. One site gave 19 November for the Ekadashi, so confirm with a local panchang. Kartik Purnima and the lamp festival of Dev Deepawali follow at the end of the month.

Day-by-day schedule

We found no verified, hour-by-hour programme for the parikrama days. In general, walkers start before sunrise and finish by midday. Temples along the route keep their usual hours, with extended darshan on the festival, but we have no official notice. Ask your driver or the temple for the day's arrangements.

Pilgrims also mark Dev Uthani with Tulsi Vivah, the symbolic wedding of tulsi and Vishnu, the next day.

Mathura parikrama route

The Mathura parikrama is about twelve kilometres around the city and begins and ends at Vishram Ghat, according to our notes. One account of the Ekadashi circuit describes it as starting in Vrindavan along the Yamuna, passing Banke Bihari, Kaliya Ghat, Chir Ghat, Nidhivan and Kesi Ghat, then going to Mathura by the road that Krishna is remembered to have taken at Kansa's invitation, via Akrur Ghat to Vishram Ghat and then back to Vrindavan. This is a single source, and different groups follow different routes. Photographs in the SOAS archive record walkers approaching Madan Mohan temple on the Ekadashi circuit.

A three-day form of the parikrama is sometimes spoken of locally; we could not verify this, so ask the temple or a guide which circuit is being walked in your year.

Crowd, safety and comfort plan

Expect cold mornings, large crowds and diverted roads. Walk with a group, carry water, slippers and a shawl, and keep valuables at home. Wear a small bag across the body. Elders should walk a stage and take a vehicle for the rest, since the circuit is long. Cars are held at outer lots on parikrama days, so your driver may meet you at the end point rather than along the way.

Wear socks and keep slippers in a bag, so you can walk barefoot where tradition asks and still protect your feet on cold or broken road.

Where to stay and when to book

Book at least a month ahead, since Kartik is one of the busiest times of the year and rooms in Mathura near Vishram Ghat fill early. Staying in Mathura gives the best start for the Mathura parikrama. Vrindavan suits those who begin on that side. The Laladham homestay can be arranged with a car for dawn drops.

Food of the day

Ekadashi is a fasting day for many, who eat fruit, milk and non-grain food, and break the fast next morning. If you do not fast, eat a light sattvik meal before the walk. Our research does not give verified shops along the route, so carry fruit, nuts and water. After the walk, kachori and lassi in the Holi Gate bazaar the next morning is a joy, according to our Mathura food guide.

Cab and guide support

A lala:Cab car can drop you at the start before dawn, move to the end point and wait with warm clothes and water. A guide can walk the first stage with you and tell the stories of each stop. You do not need to complete the circuit; a part is also an offering.
