84 Kos Braj Yatra by car: seven to ten day plan, step by step

A kos is an old measure of distance, about three kilometres. Eighty-four of them make roughly 252 km, and that is the length the Braj Chaurasi Kos Parikrama is reckoned to cover. It is told that those who walk it carry the whole land of Krishna in their feet.

On foot it takes weeks. By car, with a driver who knows the lanes, the main places can be seen in seven to ten days. This is a plan for such a yatra, with honest notes on what we have not verified.

Who this plan suits

It suits families, elders and devotees who want to see the heart of Braj without walking for weeks. It is a drive-and-darshan yatra, with short walks at each place. If you wish to do the foot parikrama, join an organised walk such as the Vrajamandala Parikrama that ISKCON conducts in Kartik, and use this guide as a way to understand the stops.

Think of this as a map of Braj's core, not of every grove. Some forests are now villages or small groves, and a few have no marked shrine at all. Your driver and a local guide will know which are worth the detour in your season, and we suggest asking them early.

What 84 kos means

The circuit runs through parts of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Haryana and takes in the twelve forests, the twenty-four groves, Govardhan, Barsana, Nandgaon, Gokul and Vrindavan. The Varaha Purana's Mathura Mahatmya lists the twelve forests, and different traditions follow slightly different routes. Local lists also differ on which forests lie on which bank of the Yamuna.

The twelve are commonly named Madhuvan, Talavan, Kumudvan, Bahulavan, Kamyavan, Khadiravan, Vrindavan, Bhandirvan, Bilvavan, Lohavan, Bhadravan and Mahavan. Kamyavan lies across the state line in Rajasthan.

Day by day

This is a model plan, grouped by area to keep each day's drive short. Adjust it to the season and to what your group can bear.

  • Day 1: Mathura. Krishna Janmabhoomi, Potra Kund, Dwarkadhish, Vishram Ghat at dusk. Overnight in Mathura or Vrindavan.
  • Day 2: Vrindavan old town. Banke Bihari, Radha Raman, Radha Vallabh, Nidhivan and Seva Kunj, with the ghats in the evening.
  • Day 3: Vrindavan, outer side. ISKCON, Prem Mandir, Katyayani Peeth, Vanshivat and, if time allows, the Vrindavan parikrama marg.
  • Day 4: Gokul and Mahavan. Nand Bhawan, Raman Reti, Brahmand Ghat and the Chaurasi Khamba, and then Baldeo to see Dauji.
  • Day 5: Govardhan. Daan Ghati, Mansi Ganga, Harideva, Jatipura and as much of the parikrama as your group wishes.
  • Day 6: Radha Kund, Shyam Kund and Kusum Sarovar, then Punchari or Govind Kund if you wish.
  • Day 7: Barsana and Nandgaon. Radha Rani on the hill, Maan Mandir, Sankari Khor and Prem Sarovar, then Nand Bhawan.
  • Day 8 onward (optional): Kamyavan in Rajasthan, Bhandirvan on the east bank and other forests, as roads and your driver advise.

Travel times

Guide data gives these approximate figures: Mathura Junction to Govardhan about 22 to 25 km, 45 to 60 minutes; Mathura to Barsana about 50 km, about 1 hour 15 minutes; Mathura to Baldeo about 21 km, 40 to 55 minutes; Gokul about 14 to 15 km from Mathura. Distances to the outer forests are not verified, so a live map and your driver's knowledge are the final word. Add time for halts, prayers and lunch.

Where to eat and rest

Food is simple and vegetarian across the circuit. Our guides name places in Mathura and Vrindavan in our food guides, Govardhan and Radha Kund have only low-trust directory entries, and Gokul, Barsana, Nandgaon and Baldeo have no named shop we could verify. Carry water, nuts and fruit, and take the main meal in town before each long drive.

Where to sleep

The easiest plan uses two bases, Vrindavan for the first four days, and Govardhan or Mathura for days five to seven. The town has homestays, ashrams, dharamshalas and hotels. Barsana has few rooms and the Govardhan area has a resort and some simple lodges, though we have not checked quality. The Laladham homestay in Vrindavan is a calm first base.

In the month of Kartik the weather is kind, the lamps are lit in every temple, and the organised walks move through the same land, so book early. In the hot months, start each day at dawn and rest from noon to four.

Seniors option

For elders, shorten the list to the core places: Mathura, Vrindavan, Gokul, Govardhan by e-rickshaw, and Barsana with a vehicle route if available. Use the flat marble of ISKCON and Prem Mandir for rest days. Avoid the foot parikrama in summer, and avoid the dense Banke Bihari lanes on weekends. A part is also dharma.

Cost shape and variations

A car-based yatra has a simple shape: a vehicle and driver for each day, fuel, tolls and parking, then stays and meals. A guide on selected days adds the stories. Ask for a written quote showing each part. Season matters, and the Holi weeks are busiest. For children, shorten the days and add pauses at Raman Reti. For a festival-week yatra, expect barricades and walking. lala:Cab can build the plan around the dates you choose.
