In most of India, Holi is a day. In Braj it is a season, a long walk of about forty days that begins with Basant Panchami and ends at Baldeo, a day after the bonfire. Each village plays it in its own way, and each way has its own story.

It is said that this is where Holi was first played, between a boy from Nandgaon and a girl from Barsana. Here is the whole season in order, so you can choose which days are worth the crowd.

What the festival is and why Braj celebrates it

The Braj tradition holds that Krishna and his friends from Nandgaon came to Radha's village, Barsana, to play Holi with the gopis. The women, led by Radha, chased them off with sticks. That is why the men of Nandgaon still visit Barsana each year, and the women of Barsana return the visit.

The scriptural root is the spring Rasa of the Bhagavata Purana (canto 10, chapters 29 to 33). The Holika and Prahlada story is told separately, in canto 7. The Lathmar custom itself is local tradition, and the officials of Mathura district arrange it each year with barricades, parking and police.

Dates and the build-up

In 2027 Holika Dahan is on 21 March and Holi on 22 March, according to the panchang sources we found. For the Braj days, reports differ by a day. One tourism source gives about 16 March for Barsana and 17 March for Nandgaon, and another gives 17 and 18 March. Neither is final, so wait for the official list.

The season starts at Basant Panchami, when the first gulal is offered in temples. In the weeks before Holi, temples in Vrindavan and Mathura play with colour in their own courtyards, so there is something happening even on an ordinary visit.

Book your stay and cab the moment the panchang dates are published. Rooms in Barsana go early.

Day by day at each place

A rough order, to be confirmed each year, runs like this. Barsana's laddu day comes first, the day before Lathmar. Lathmar itself falls on Navami of the bright half of Phalguna, with Nandgaon's turn after. Banke Bihari plays flower Holi around Ekadashi, which in 2027 falls around 18 March by one calendar. Holi and Holika Dahan follow, and Dauji Huranga at Baldeo comes the day after Holi.

The distance between Barsana and Nandgaon is about 8 km, and Baldeo is far to the south-east, about 45 km from Barsana. Vrindavan temples keep their own programmes, so ask at each one.

The laddu day in Barsana

On Laddu Holi, laddus are thrown into the crowd in the Radha Rani temple, and people throw them back along with a cloud of gulal. It is joyful and sticky, so wear old clothes and keep your mouth shut when the colour flies.

The temple is at the top of a long stair, so a young and fit crowd gets in first. Elders should ask whether an alternative vehicle road is open, and should seriously consider watching from the lower lanes.

Lathmar in both villages

The men arrive in procession, singing teasing songs, and the women meet them with bamboo staves. The men hold shields and take their blows with a grin. The mood is celebration, never fighting. Next day, in Nandgaon, the roles are reversed.

The roads are controlled. In 2024, 45 parking slots were reported for Barsana, and private cars were stopped far from town. Expect to walk 2 to 4 km, or 30 to 60 minutes, on the day.

Flowers at Banke Bihari

At Banke Bihari in Vrindavan the Holi is of flower petals thrown over the deity and devotees, around Ekadashi in Phalguna according to the guide. It is soft and fragrant. It is also one of the busiest times in Vrindavan, with long queues in lanes that are already narrow.

The exact date and the temple's rules for the day should be asked locally, because the arrangements and the lane layout change often.

Huranga at Baldeo, and the widows' Holi

The day after Holi, at Baldeo, the men and women of the village play a rough-and-tumble version in the temple courtyard, called Huranga. The women tear the shirts of the men, and the men are expected to bear it. Reports give 23 March for 2027, which is only a single-source estimate.

Baldeo is far from the others, so it often needs a day of its own.

In Vrindavan, widows who live in the ashrams are now part of the celebrations, and a gathering with colours and flowers is held at a temple in the town, according to reports. We could not confirm the exact temple or date for 2027, so treat this as a point to check locally.

If you attend, treat it as a blessing and not a spectacle. Ask before taking photographs.

Crowd, safety, comfort and cab support

The crowd is extremely heavy. Women are advised to go in groups and leave valuables where you sleep. Wear old clothes and closed shoes you can lose, cover your hair with a dupatta or cap, and protect phones with waterproof pouches. Carry little, because your camera will probably get wet.

Toilets are temporary and food is mostly street stalls. Arrive the evening before and leave after the second day. Overpriced rooms and rides are a problem, so book ahead.

lala:Cab drivers know the designated lots and can drop you at the right one, but on Holi days the last kilometres are on foot for everyone. A guide helps you find the temple courtyard and the quieter side lanes.
