Day route

From Banke Bihari's lanes to Giriraj's hill

About 35 km1 to 1.25 hr by carGive 4 to 6 hours there

Going from Vrindavan to Govardhan is going from the forest of Krishna's play to the mountain he lifted. The road is short and the day it holds is long, so start early and give it a full half day at least.

Distance and route

There is no single published figure for this exact pair, so here is how we reckon it. Vrindavan is about 12 km from Mathura, and Mathura to Govardhan is about 23 to 25 km on the Mathura to Deeg road, per Wikipedia and our own route notes. Whether the car goes through Mathura or around it, plan on roughly 35 km and an hour to an hour and a quarter. Your driver will know the day's best way.

On the way

We have place guides for each. They help you decide what to see and what to leave for the next visit.

  • Mathura: Krishna Janmabhoomi and Vishram Ghat are the natural pause if you did not see them already.
  • Radha Kund and Shyam Kund lie just beyond Govardhan town, and many pilgrims bathe or pray there.
  • Mansi Ganga, Daan Ghati and Kusum Sarovar come later on the parikrama.

Best hour to go

Leave Vrindavan around 5:30 to 6 am in summer, so the walking part is finished before the sun is high. In winter an 8 am start is comfortable, but fog can slow the morning road. Evenings at Govardhan are lovely and cooler, yet you should reach the car before dark, as the parikrama path is lightly lit in places.

How much time to give

The parikrama of the hill is about 21 km on foot. Few visitors walk all of it in one go. Most families do a car-assisted version with stops, which takes five to six hours with rests. If you want only a darshan at the Mansi Ganga and Daan Ghati side, two to three hours is enough. Our Govardhan parikrama page explains each option in detail.

Buses and shared rides, honestly

There is no direct shuttle we can verify from Vrindavan. The usual public plan is to reach Mathura first, then take a state bus or shared vehicle on the Govardhan road. UPSRTC and tourist buses serve Govardhan, but timings are informal and rides can be crowded. Expect to change vehicles once, and carry water.

Elders should avoid midday walking in summer. A car that waits at every stop is worth more than it looks.

Dress, water and the small things

Dress simply, with shoulders and knees covered. Carry a light cloth to sit on, a bottle of water and a cap in summer. Mud can follow monsoon rain on the village stretches, so a pair of shoes you do not mind staining is sensible.

Keep your phone and glasses in a zipped bag, because monkeys are bold here too. If you hire a guide, ask the name and the plan before you start, and fix the hours so that the day does not stretch.

Making it a gentler day

Break the day in two if anyone is tired. Reach Govardhan by mid-morning, see Mansi Ganga and the Daan Ghati side, then rest through the afternoon at a simple dharamshala or a lunch place. Take the Kund temples in the cooler evening and return after aarti.

If you are staying with us at Laladham, the day can start with a hot breakfast and end with a quiet meal. We can pair a driver who knows the hill with a guide who tells the story at each stop, so that no one in the family has to read a map or count the kilometres.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Can I do Govardhan and Barsana the same day?

It is possible but long. Most travellers split them, with Govardhan one morning and Barsana and Nandgaon another.

Is Govardhan on the way to Barsana?

Not directly. Barsana is reached by the Chhata and Kosi side, so plan the two as separate legs.

Do I need a guide at Govardhan?

Not required, but a guide helps with the Kund stories and the right order of stops.

Are shoes allowed on the parikrama path?

Many pilgrims walk barefoot as a devotion, though the ground is hot in summer. Carry socks or a sheet to stand on.
