From Radha's town onward to Agra: how the transfer works

About 70 km1.5 hr by carNo train from Vrindavan

Many guests finish Vrindavan and carry on to Agra, or the other way round. This page covers only movement: road, train and bus. For the Taj itself, see the Agra visit plan.

By road

The distance is about 70 km. The common route runs through Mathura and then down NH-19, the old highway to Agra. The Yamuna Expressway also ends at NH-19 in Kuberpur, Agra, and has an exit at Mathura, so a driver may choose either on the day. Most guides place the drive at one to one and a half hours, and our advice is to add half an hour for Agra's own traffic.

Toll plazas on the expressway are paid by FastTag in most cars, which keeps the journey smooth. Ask the driver whether the vehicle carries a working tag before you leave, and keep the first hour free of stops so that you reach Agra while the morning is still cool.

By train, with a car for the first leg

Since Vrindavan's rail line is closed, begin by reaching Mathura Junction. From Mathura to Agra Cantt, erail shows a distance of 53 km. The fastest trains need 30 to 35 minutes. For example, Shatabdi 12002 leaves Mathura at 07:20 and arrives at Agra Cantt at 07:50, and Telangana Express 12724 leaves at 17:31 and arrives at 18:05. Many other expresses cover it in 35 minutes.

This works if you have a fixed train from Agra the same evening. Otherwise a car through is simpler.

Use Agra Cantt for most long-distance trains. Check which station your ticket says.

By bus

Buses from the Mathura bus stand run towards Agra, and any bus on the Delhi to Agra highway passes Mathura. From Vrindavan you would first get to Mathura or the highway at Chhatikara. It is workable for a light traveller, though slower and less certain than a car.

Planning the day

If you want to see Agra the same day, leave Vrindavan by 6 am. Agra's monuments run on their own schedule, and the Taj is closed on Fridays. The Agra day-trip page covers opening hours, tickets and pace.

Fatehpur Sikri lies about 40 km from Mathura and fits on the same road as a second stop.

Mistakes to avoid

Do not plan a Friday visit to the Taj, since it is closed that day. Do not book a tight evening train out of Agra unless your driver knows the traffic. And do not forget that Agra's own roads can double the last ten kilometres.

If you carry your luggage, decide beforehand where it stays. A car can hold it in the boot all day. A train trip means carrying or leaving it in a cloakroom.

Moving on from Agra

From Agra you can continue towards Jaipur by road or rail, or come back to Braj the same day. Tell us the whole plan on WhatsApp, so the driver, the hour and the stops are settled before you leave.

Documents and money

Keep your ID and tickets handy. Foreign visitors will need the passport for monument entry, and card or online payment is common at Agra's gates. Carry a little cash for parking, tea and small offerings.

If you travel with an elder or someone with limited mobility, tell us beforehand. Parking close to the entrance, a wheelchair, or a slower start can often be arranged, and it changes the day more than any road does.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Is there a direct train from Vrindavan to Agra?

No. Go to Mathura Junction first, then take a train or a car to Agra.

Which is faster, train or cab?

The train covers 53 km in about 35 minutes, but the two transfers around it make a door-to-door cab roughly equal.

Can I go back the same evening?

Yes. The road is quick enough for a day trip, provided you leave early.

Is the Yamuna Expressway better than NH-19?

It is wider and faster, yet toll-based. The driver will choose by the day's traffic.
