The distance and the road
By road the distance is about 12 km, which most local guides round to 10 to 15 km depending on where in Vrindavan you are going. Allow about half an hour in daylight. Morning and evening traffic around Mathura can stretch it, and the busiest lanes of Vrindavan are better crossed on foot or by e-rickshaw than by a full-size car.
Roads change with repairs and festival diversions, so ask the driver for the route on the day. If you are travelling in the Kartik month or on a big holiday, add another half hour to be safe, and let the room host know your arrival time so the room is ready.
Why there is no train for this stretch
An old metre-gauge line once joined Mathura and Vrindavan. It was closed in March 2023 for conversion and, per Wikipedia and PTI reports, permanent closure was approved in 2025. If an app or an old blog shows a shuttle train, treat it as out of date.
Your four ways to go
- Pre-booked taxi: the calm option for families, elders and heavy bags. The car meets you, and nothing is negotiated on the pavement.
- Auto-rickshaw: available outside the station. Agree the fare before you sit, because first quotes tend to be high.
- Shared e-rickshaw or auto: the cheapest way, taken by many daily travellers. It leaves when it fills, and it drops at fixed points rather than at your door.
- Bus: services on the highway drop some riders at Chhatikara, then change to an e-rickshaw. It works if you travel light and are not in a hurry.
Luggage and elders
A taxi is the easiest with more than two bags. Shared vehicles have little room and strict stops. If a family member walks slowly, ask the driver to take the gate nearest your guest house, since parts of old Vrindavan are closed to cars during the day.
Arriving at night
Night trains often reach Mathura between midnight and dawn. The station is open and lit, but shared transport thins out after dark. Tell your guest house the train number, and keep the ride booked in advance. Most people sleep until the first aarti the next day, and that is entirely fine.
Where the cab finds you
Send us your train number, coach and arrival time on WhatsApp. The driver tracks the train, waits at the station, and we message the exact meeting point and the car number before you step out. Mathura Cantt is a separate, smaller station, so tell us which one your ticket says.
What to carry and what to skip
Keep a small bag with water, a light shawl, change for tips and a printed copy of your booking. Phones are best kept zipped away near the station, where crowds are thick. Leave big gold jewellery at home. Old Vrindavan is narrow, and a soft bag is far easier to carry than a hard suitcase.
If a porter offers help, agree on the charge first. If an unknown person offers a hotel or temple guide at the exit, politely decline, and walk to the vehicle you have booked. A calm no costs you nothing.
- Current auto, e-rickshaw and bus fares and where the shared vehicles wait.
- Which Vrindavan lanes are closed to cars at which hours on the day you arrive.
