Booking a stay for Holi, Janmashtami and Kartik: when to lock it

Every year the same story repeats in Braj. A family decides in February to see Holi in Barsana, searches for a room, and finds that the good ones went in November. The festival is not hard to attend. It is hard to book.

Here is the lead time that experienced pilgrims use, and the questions to ask before you pay.

Who this stay suits

This note is for anyone planning to be in Braj during a major festival: Holi, Janmashtami, Radhashtami, Sharad Purnima, Kartik, Diwali, Guru Purnima or the New Year. It is also for groups and families of more than four, who find rooms hardest to place.

In an ordinary week you can book a few days ahead and ask for a better rate.

Options explained (homestay, ashram, dharamshala, hotel)

In festival weeks, ashrams and dharamshalas often take bookings only from their own devotees or by long-standing request. Hotels raise rates sharply and may require full prepayment. Homestays have few rooms but can be flexible if you write early. ISKCON-linked rooms are among the first to go, especially in December and around Janmashtami.

Barsana and Nandgaon have few rooms at all, so many Holi visitors stay in Mathura or Vrindavan and travel in early. Wingston Treehouse Hotel in Barsana is searched often, but its food and rules are unverified.

Festival by festival, in a few lines

Holi: Barsana, Nandgaon and Vrindavan fill first, and cars are kept out of the towns. Janmashtami: Mathura near the Janmabhoomi fills first, and roads close from the day before. Radhashtami: Barsana fills, and the hill road is jammed. Kartik: ISKCON and the Radha Kund side fill, with long-stay pilgrims. Diwali and Govardhan Puja: Govardhan, Mathura and Vrindavan fill all at once. Guru Purnima: Govardhan fills and pilgrims sleep wherever there is a floor. New Year: Vrindavan fills with families from Delhi and Agra, and Banke Bihari issues advisories.

Each festival has its own peak day, so check the exact date with a panchang.

Location logic: distance to temples

During festivals, private vehicles are barred from the old towns and routes. The district sets parking lots, and in 2024 Barsana had 45 slots for Lathmar Holi. At Janmashtami the Mathura roads to the Janmabhoomi were restricted for several days in the 2026 plan. So the real distance is the walk from the lot, not the distance on the map.

A room within walking distance of the main event is worth paying more for in these weeks, because you can leave the car behind.

How early to book

Experienced pilgrims lock rooms two to three months ahead for Holi, Janmashtami and Kartik, and at least four to six weeks ahead for Diwali week. Holi 2027 is expected on 22 March, with Lathmar days a few days earlier, so rooms should be fixed by December or January. Dates can still shift by a day in the sources, so ask for a stay that allows a date change.

Book the cab at the same time, because cars are scarce on the same days.

If you cannot book early, go for a flexible rate and watch for cancellations. Rooms do come back a week or two before the festival, as plans change.

Rules, timings and booking

Ask about the cancellation terms and whether the advance is refundable. Pay only to a verifiable number or account, and keep screenshots. Confirm the check-in time, the gate time, extra-person charges and whether the property sits inside a vehicle-restricted zone. In Holi week, ask whether colour is allowed inside and whether the stay has towels and a place to wash.

A week before travel, message the host to reconfirm the room, the arrival time and the parking.

  • Written confirmation with dates and price
  • Refund and date-change terms
  • Distance from the nearest permitted vehicle lot
  • Gate time and visitor policy
  • Phone number you can reach on the day
  • Backup option in case of a cancellation

What festival pricing looks like

In festival weeks, expect rates to rise, minimum-stay rules to appear and refund terms to harden. Some properties ask for a full payment up front, and some raise the rate when the festival date is confirmed. It is normal to see a room cost much more than the same room in a quiet week. Compare two or three places before you decide, and do not assume that the highest price means the best location.

If the price feels out of line, look at a neighbouring town. Mathura rooms near the station or the Janmabhoomi often cost less than Vrindavan rooms during the same festival, and Vrindavan is only a short drive away outside the restricted hours.

Keep the confirmation message, the host's number and the cab driver's number together in one note on your phone before the festival begins.

Why a homestay with lala:Cab (Laladham)

A small homestay can hold your dates in a way large places cannot, because one household answers one phone. Our Laladham stay is on the ISKCON and Prem Mandir side. On festival days we plan the drive and the walking route around the road closures, so that you do not stand in a jam wondering where to get down.

It helps to share your group size and ages early. Elders and children change the plan, and we would rather adjust it in February than at the gate.

How early should I book for Holi in Barsana?

Two to three months ahead is common. Holi 2027 is expected around 22 March, so book by December or January.

Can I drive to my hotel on Janmashtami?

Possibly not. Roads to the Janmabhoomi and Vrindavan are restricted for several days, so ask the host where the nearest lot is.
