The story: Shani Dev and the cuckoo of Kokilavan

Shani, the planet Saturn and son of Surya, longed for a darshan of Krishna. When Krishna was born, Shani came to Nandgaon but was refused, because Yashoda feared his gaze for her child. Krishna, who knew his heart, told Shani to wait in the forest and promised darshan there. Shani stood a long time. Then Krishna appeared in the form of a cuckoo (koel), spoke his name sweetly, and gave darshan. The grove has been called Kokilavan ever since.

Krishna blessed Shani: those who visit the grove, worship Shani there and walk the parikrama will be free from the pain of his gaze. This story belongs to local tradition and is not told in the Bhagavatam text, so treat it accordingly.

Shani is the teacher of patience and karma. Walk the parikrama calmly and take responsibility for your own deeds, which is a Gita-style way to meet him (Bhagavad Gita 3.19, act without attachment).
