Gokul, Mahavan and Baldeo: places, parking and rules
The infancy of Krishna: the cradle, the mortar, the mud and the elder brother.
Across the Yamuna from Mathura, Gokul and Mahavan are where baby Krishna grew up: Putana, Trinavarta, the Damodar Lila and the mud-eating all happened here. Baldeo is the temple town of Dauji (Balarama). These are quiet village-like places with narrow lanes.
From Mathura Junction: Gokul and Mahavan about 11 to 13 km; Baldeo about 21 km. Best time: Morning. Winter. How long: Half a day. Gokul, Raman Reti, Mahavan, Brahmand Ghat, then Baldeo if time permits.
Parking and vehicle rules in Gokul, Mahavan and Baldeo
- The old lanes of Gokul and Mahavan are narrow. Cars park at the chowk or on the main road and you walk the last stretch

- Parking charges are small, roughly Rs 30 to 50. Check locally
Getting around
- Cabs are the best option; public transport is slow
- E-rickshaws are available in the lanes
- Baldeo is on the Agra side of Mathura, about 25 to 35 minutes beyond Mahavan
Local food of Gokul, Mahavan and Baldeo
Food here is thin and simple: makhan-mishri and prasad stalls around Gokulnath, a sweet called kheermohan mentioned for Mahavan, and a bazaar around the Dauji temple in Baldeo with no shop we can name. Eat at Mathura first, carry sealed water, and treat Baldeo sweets with care: a ghevar sample from a Baldeo shop went to the lab in August 2026. Check locally for everything.
